Elsie Kanza and Susan Mashibe
International Womens Day became more meaningful and momentous for Elsie Kanza, Personal Assistant to of President Jakaya Kikwete, (Economic Affairs) and Susan Mashibe, TanJet Executive Director and Founder, who were named by the World Economic Forum as Young Global Leaders 2011.
The Forum has honoured 190 young leaders from 65 countries for their outstanding leadership, professional accomplishments and commitment to society.
The WEF statement from Geneva said young Global Leaders are selected from a variety of sectors such as business, government, academia, media, non-profit organisations, arts and culture, and from all regions of the world.
It said further that young Global Leaders engage in task forces that address specific challenges of public interest with the objective of shaping a better future
Kanza was appointed Personal Assistant to the President (Economic Affairs) in March 2006. Prior to that, she worked in various capacities in the Ministry of Finance (2002 - 2006) and with the Bank of Tanzania (1997 2002). She holds a BSc (honours) in International Business Administration from the United States International University Africa (USIU-A), an MSc in Finance from the University of Strathclyde (UK) and an MA in Development Economics from Williams College (USA).
She has been recognised with a number of different honours, including being a panelist at the 50th Anniversary of the Centre for Development Economics (CDE) at Williams College last year, serving as the national focal point for the World Economic Forum on Africa last year, as well as receiving the 2008 Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Fellow Award, the 2000 CDE Climb Every Mountain Award, and the 1995 USIU-A Leadership Distinction Award. She is also involved in civic society as an Honorary Committee member of the 1x1microcredit.org, a member of the Society for International Development and a member of Rotary Club of Bahari Dar es Salaam.
Mashibe is the executive director and founder of TanJet, an international Fixed Base operations service and the first company of its kind in Tanzania, mastering logistical support for corporate, diplomatic and private jets.
TanJet has transformed the way business aviation operates in East Africa, and its clients include Heads of State, monarchs, Fortune 500 executives, celebrities, and military flights.
Mashibe runs another company, Kilimanjaro Aviation Logistic Center, that processes landing and overflight clearances for private jets throughout the African continent. Currently, she is establishing aircraft maintenance and repairs services at Kilimanjaro in order to provide modern, quality and safe scheduled maintenance services for general and corporate aviation in the region.
Mashibe is also the first woman in East Africa to become both a FAA certified pilot and an aircraft maintenance engineer.
Since forming TanJet in 2003, Mashibe has been recognised with a number of different honours, including receiving the 2009 Archbishop Tutu Fellowship Award and the 2009 Women of Achievement Award.
For 2011, the Forum has selected 190 Young Global Leaders from 65 countries and all sectors of society (business, civil society, social entrepreneurs, politics and government, arts and culture, and opinion and media).
The new class represents all regions: East Asia (50), South Asia (18), Europe (42), Middle East and North Africa (13), sub-Saharan Africa (14), North America (37) and Latin America (16). This years selection has more gender balance than ever, with 44% being women.
Drawn from a pool of almost 5,000 candidates, the Young Global Leaders 2011 were chosen by a selection committee chaired by H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The Young Global Leaders 2011 reflect different kinds of leadership in different parts of the world and society. The 2011 honourees will become part of the broader Forum of Young Global Leaders community that currently comprises 668 outstanding individuals. The YGLs convene at an Annual Summit, which will be held this year in Dalian, Peoples Republic of China on 12-16 September.
