TBC: We will continue with TV debates
Thursday, 09 September 2010 23:29
By Beatus Kagashe The Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) yesterday said will continue with its live debates on constituencies despite withdraw of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). Speaking to The Citizen yesterday, the TBC executive director Mr Tido Mhando said the program will continue all over the country to parliamentary candidates willing to participate.
"We will continue with the program as planned with candidates who are willing… even if we will get two among those who are contesting in a certain constituency the program will be aired," said Mr Mhando. The CCM secretary general Mr Yusuph Makamba wrote to all CCM district and regional secretaries directing them to stop its parliamentary candidates from participating on the show. But the move was criticised by other political parties who said it hinders democracy in the country. The debates which are aired twice a week on Tuesday and Saturday brings together various parliamentary candidates in their respective constituencies. Mr Makamba said he had no problem with the debates but he was concerned over the participation of CCM candidates.
In his August 31 letter with reference number CCM/OND/SG/194/9, Mr Makamba said he had no confidence with the TBC programme and wondered how the CCM parliamentary candidates had participated without permission from their party. The letter said CCM parliamentary candidates will be allowed to participate in such debates when the governing ruling established benefits for participating in such debates. Mr Mhando said
TBC is and will not be affected by CCM decisions to withdraw from the debate because the program is voluntary. "The program is voluntary, we ask candidates to participate and only those who agree are participating… in Vunjo constituency one candidate did not participate but it was not a problem," said Mr Mhando. During the debate, parliamentary candidates from various political parties are given minutes to explain their party manifestos before they field questions from the participants.
