TANZANIA Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) inspectors discovered illegal installation of 58 metres in a building in Dar es Salaam and power units worth over 8m/- suspected to have been stolen.

The metres were found at 'Sophia House,' a building located along Chang'ombe road in Temeke Municipality.

The power units worth 8m/- were recharged in three of the 58 metres. Most of the metres were still new and connected directly from the service line.
"A single house with 58 metres is by all standards unacceptable and a stolen electricity worth 8m/- is also too much," said the TANESCO Manager for Large Power Users, Mr Francis Maze.
Mr Maze who is also the head of inspection unit elaborated further that under normal circumstances internal metres were supposed to be for internal use only and a house was supposed to have only one metre. "We will investigate the matter and find out who were involved in in the scandal," he said.
The TANESCO Communication Manager, Ms Badra Masoud, said the company would get hold of the owner of the building and take relevant legal action. "We will require them to pay all the debts before going to court," she said.
Ms Masoud called on other users to ensure that all their units are purchased from registered agents. She reiterated that customers with faults should report to TANESCO within a month as announced earlier or else they would face the music. Mr Hashim Juma, a worker at the building which houses several apartments and shops, said that he was surprised by the incident as all the metres were installed by Tanesco staff.
