21.8m eligible voters registered, says NEC

Surpasses target by .5m people
The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has announced that it has surpassed the voter registration target for the forthcoming general election.
The Deputy Secretary to the Commission, Dr Sisti Cariah said yesterday that about 21.8 million eligible voters have been registered to vote in the coming election.
The commission said that it was targeting to register about 21.3 million.
Dr. Cariah was speaking when the visiting chair of the United Nations Development group and UNDP Administrator, Helen Clark, visited the National Electoral Commission processing Centre in Dar es Salaam.
He said that the number of registered voters was equal to 86 percent of the population of the eligible voters.
Dr Cariah thanked UNDP for their support to the general election since being requested to do so in 2004, saying it has had a great significance on the process since 2005.
He said NEC has improved its Information Technology (IT) as part of preparations for the forthcoming elections.
He said almost all equipment is ready for the coming general elections, except for ballot papers.
….."Our objective is to conduct credible, free and fair general election in October this year" said Cariah.
Giving her remarks, Clark said she was impressed with the seriousness of the activities that NEC was carrying out.
She called on the Commission to emphasis civic education for the people, so that they all know the importance of participating in the election.
She said in the training special groups should be given first priority so that they can fully participate in the process.
Commission's Executive Director, Raja Karamu pledged that his office will make sure that the coming elections were free and fair.

Wa tatu alikuwa Freeman Mbowe aliyepata jumla ya kura 668,756 ambazo ni sawa na asilimia 5.9, waliofuata baada ya hao walipata kura chini ya asilimia moja.
