Casual labourers with the China Railway 15 Bureau Group Corporation at Matai town in Kalambo District, Rukwa Region on Saturday locked up their bosses for failure to pay them in time and fairly.
The China Railway 15 Bureau Group Corporation jointly with Henan Provincial Newcentry Road and Bridge Consultants Limited have been contracted to upgrade the Sumbawanga-Matai-Kasanga Port road (112km) to tarmac level at the cost of 133.28bn/-. The Chinese bosses called police for help. The police went to the scene of the incident swiftly and helped to calm the two parties.
The workers told the ‘Daily News' that the Chinese were underpaying them. He said local mechanics were being paid 10,000/- a day, instead of the agreed amount of 12,000/-, while casual labourers were getting 3,500/- a day instead of 5,000/- that was agreed.
"Our bosses have refused to increase payment despite consistent demand from us," he said on condition of anonymity. The Matai Police Post in-charge, Mr Hosea Setieli, confirmed the incident and said there was no casualty nor damage of oproperty. He said the contractors and labourers have reached an agreement.
