What Philip of Spain really thought about his Marriage to Mary ?
With his male friends the King mad it plain that, for him, this was marriage of convenience only, and that he was not attracted to Mary.
He even complained to one gentleman that her portraits painters had flattered her in order to conceal the truth from him. Gomez commented, with feeling ‘ To speak frankly, it will take God himself to drink this cup.’
Soon , some members of Philip’s entourage were asked, ‘ What shall the King do with such an old bitch?’ And alleging that Mary was old enough to be his mother.
