(Rutashubanyuma Nestory – A public policy analyst based in Arusha.)
During my last visit at Arusha main market recently, I overheard a frenzy discussion among a congregation of disheveled hawkers that caught my imagination beyond belief.
The topic under discussion was why they should vote for a political party, CCM, which has shown overtime she disdains the electorate following the party developing cold feet to face the wrath of voters in electoral debates. One vendor was quick to remind the other one that he was a sworn CCM activist the latter one hurled a riposte that equated CCM adulation was nowadays a mental derangement!
The general composure of that gathering was CCM was evasive to account for her filthy past because she has read her political compass thoroughly well concluding either way she was losing big time this election. Then the narrative goes CCM has carefully interpolated why quickening the tempo of handing power to Chadema in those pernicious debates where the electorate will get another legitimate opportunity to revisit and query mega graft cases to have violently shaken the core of the nation's moral fabric.
Also, the frenetic gamins viewed the whole caboodle of unchallenged CCM aspirants as signs of the party living on borrowed time. The hawkers upbraided a cakewalk to the House without passing the electability test of the electorate was a seal for unpopularity.
This unscientific snapshot of things to come indicated abundantly clear that only massive rigging may stop Dr. Slaa of Chadema from forming a new government and the lanky boys hinted they were rearing for mass action to foist CCM to recount the votes and goad her to humbly accept the ineluctable defeat.
As I was departing from the perimeters of an earshot the last gush of audacious yells my alert ears picked was "Yote yawezekana bila CCM." In online banter, unconfirmed claims of teachers being paid salary increases while other civil servants have been left dry and fuming are also gaining hefty traction.
The gist of argument there budges readers to buy a cheap shot that teachers are being bribed to rig the election in favour of CCM. It is mentioned there teachers are the ones who will be doing the counting at polling stations and from the way the local governments have been lopping names of Chadema House aspirants such frissons cannot easily be whisked away.
In Arusha Municipality already one casualty is the immediate Executive Director who has been sent packing after a short notice following his decision to exercise independent judgment from ruling party when he refused to slash the name of Chadema House aspirant.
CCM proclaims ignorance on the matter but the brutal manner of the transfer previews massive rigging is imminent. All these tidbits are an eye opener to National Election Commission – NEC: Our election process is on the dock for the integrity and her legitimacy.
Of all the things the nation does not need are Kenyan style bloodshed unleashed by a disenchanted populace exploiting a rigged election to foster and jolt a catharsis.
Chadema top commander, Mr. Mbowe, has also disparaged "SYNOVATE" for being too economical on their most recent general election polling release. According to Mr. Mbowe, CCM will narrowly lose the presidential election where Dr. Slaa of Chadema will snap 44% of the cast votes leaving Dr. Kikwete of CCM historically relinquishing the presidency after being immured nursing a 41% of the cast votes.
As much as we may doubt the credibility of the messenger but such revelations astonishes a few given impassioned multitudes in attendances to Dr. Slaa's campaign gatherings. "SYNOVATE" were expected to tell us the status of voters' preferences knowing the election was a month and a half down the horizon and a failure to do that point to the inauguration of hard tackles by the power that be. If this information is correct then "SYNOVATE" is at the beck and call of the ruling party and can not be expected to be an impartial player on this D-Day on governance.
A new dawn beckons on us and everyone needs to co-operate and accept the truth or an avoidable juggernaut may come calling….
