The Minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe said the government has reports of plots by some private truck and bus owners to sabotage the rail transport.
Dr Mwakyembe said this in Dar es Salaam yesterday when responding to questions after opening a two-day workshop aimed at discussing recommendations in formulating the countrys railway transport policy framework involving members of a special Railway Advisory Committee.
He said despite the fact that the government has got the reports there was no evidence to prove the alleged sabotage plans.
Yes we have got that information, but the issue is --- where is the evidence to enable us take effective measures, he said.
Meanwhile the minister said the country has failed to utilise the readily available business opportunities arising from trade with her landlocked neighbours due to lack of reliable, adequate, efficient and affordable transport service.
He said in the past, rail transport in the country played a leading role in ferrying both cargo and passengers at affordable prices, but this changed following deterioration of the countrys central railway line and the Tanzania Zambia Railway line (TAZARA) in the mid-90s.
Being a coastal country, Tanzania is failing to utilise the readily available business opportunities arising from the International trade with her six neighboring landlocked countries, although I believe we have the capability
The railway transport in our country has been characterised by high costs, unreliability, poor safety standards and low quality services due to inadequate investment, dysfunctional institutional arrangements, laws, policies and regulatory systems which did not promote competition and efficiency and these were the main reasons to constitute this committee, he said.
For his part, the Committee Chairperson, Eng Dr Malima Bundara said the railway sector in the country has been neglected and that his committee has discovered a lot of challenges which face the sector including invasion of the railroad by the citizens and an outdated width of the railway.
