NANSIO, UKEREWE. The National Chairman of the main opposition political party- CHADEMA Mr Freeman Mbowe, has criticized the dire poverty situation affecting around 400, 000 people across 38 islands in the Ukerewe district of Mwanza region.

Addressing thousands of citizens in Irugwa, Ukara, Kakukuru, Muriti, and Nansio Wards in the district, Mr Mbowe called on the residents of these islands to completely reject the rule of the ruling party (CCM).

The opposition leader slammed the government and the state-owned power company TANESCO for failing to provide electricity to Ukerewe residents who are currently relying on expensive electricity from the private company Jumeme

"I have been told that you are buying one unit for TZS 2,000, whereas TANESCO's electricity for one unit is about TZS 357," said Mr Mbowe.

Moreover, Mr Mbowe expressed disappointment that despite Ukerewe's reliance on the fishing sector, there has been no effort to establish fish processing plants, criticising the government for imposing high taxes and levies which have negatively impacted the livelihoods of fishermen.

"Excessive taxes are killing fishing capital and completely impoverishing the fishermen," said the opposition leader.

Mr Mbowe also pointed out that lack of agricultural inputs and poor irrigation infrastructure have led to low food production on the islands, a situation that has resulted in food shortages, forcing the residents to buy food from outside the islands.

"We have a lake, but the CCM government has failed to take diplomatic and investment measures to enable this lake to be used for irrigation agriculture. You are suffering from hunger because you are being led by individuals who think of using their authority to enrich themselves and their families only," emphasized Mbowe.

During his tour of the Islands on Thursday, Mr Mbowe also learnt that more than 60% of Ukerewe's population lacks access to clean and safe drinking water.

In relation to the education sector in the country, the opposition leader pointed out that the education being offered in the country doesn't provide Tanzanian children with the skills or job-related competencies needed to compete effectively in the job market.

During the rallies in Ukerewe district, Mr Mbowe had learnt from the residents that approximately 30 out of the 38 islands in the district lacked educational services, and even in areas with schools, there was a severe shortage of teachers, a situation that forces parents to incur significant costs by contributing to fund volunteer teachers.

"All these contributions for food, desks, and exams undermine the concept of free education in the country," said the opposition leader.

Mr Mbowe also learnt that the district faces a shortage of health facilities, with limited clinics and health centres whereby he called on the residents of the islands to stop complaining instead they should take steps to get themselves rid of the existing challenges by removing the ruling party CCM from the office in the upcoming elections.

Sometimes truth has to be told that most of we Africans think that government is able to solve each problem we are facing while we citizens are sleeping. You might find most of rural areas people are lazy and living comfortably under extreme poverty....I am kilimanjaro dweller who currently works at liwale,,I have seen clear differences between the two places. And surely I can tell it will take several decades under this lifestyle of liwale dwellers to reach level of development of inner most

Poverty and unequal distribution of wealth in our country is not CCM's fault,

But the state decided that in politics is where money is channeled rather than proffessionalism!

It's through professionalism where people get true education and be able to sustain lifehood and not politics!

The state are the one to blame for this because they protect ccm and their death aproach towards Tanzanians lifehood!
