The Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) yesterday stopped their Mainland counterparts Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) from displaying banners of Taifa Stars` sponsors in Zanzibar.
Stars are camping in Zanzibar to prepare for the inaugural Africa Cup of Nations Cup (Chan) finals to be held in Ivory Coast from January 22 to March 8.
TFF information officer Florian Kaijage said yesterday at the Mao-dze-Dong Stadium that the stopping order was given by ZFA president Ali Fereji Tamim.
Kaijage said that Tamim ordered them not to display the banners of Serengeti beer and National Microfinance Bank (NMB) in the stadium.
Serengeti and NMB are the main sponsors of the Taifa Stars.
``We have decided to obey the order because we do not want quarrels. We will train without displaying those banners,`` Kaijage said.
ZFA publicity secretary Maulid Hamad Maulid confirmed that they banned the display of the banners because one of them was promoting alcohol which was prohibited in Zanzibar.
He said the Zanzibar government had ordered ZFA not to display any banner promoting alcohol in any of the Isles` stadiums.
Stars are in Group A together with Zambia, Senegal and hosts Zimbabwe.
Group B comprises Ghana, Libya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
