    Daily News; Wednesday,January 16, 2008 @19:04

ONE of the forty Mbeya residents arrested between January and December, last year, for vandalising various public infrastructures, mostly the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara), has been jailed for five years.

Mbeya Regional Police Commander Suleiman Kova said in his last year's annual report that the alleged culprits were arrested while removing slabs from the railway line to sale as iron scraps.

Mr Kova said the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) also lost millions of shillings through thefts of telephone wires and cables. In one incident, a number of suspects were found in possession of six tonnes of stolen telephone wires, he noted.

He said over 500 litres of transformer oil and hundred tonnes of transmission wires were impounded by police after the arrest of suspects during the same period. According to the RPC, a record of 223 various types of firearms including rifles, pistols, gobores (locally made guns) and shotguns being recovered from wrong hands with Mbozi District leading in the illegal possession of firearms.

Mr Kova noted that apart from the application of community policing, other means, including roadblocks, the ant-robbery and intelligence units were used in arresting over 1,500 suspected criminals during the year.
