Justice Mponda arrested for insulting president Joyce Banda

The police in Blantyre have arrested journalist Justice Mponda who writes for Malawi Voice online, on allegations of insulting president Joyce Banda.

Spokesperson for the southern region police assistant superintendent Nicholas Gondwa confirmed of the arrest to Zodiak Online.

“We* arrested the journalist, Justice Mponda, who writes for Malawi Voice an online publication around 5 am today,” said superintendent Gondwa.

“He has been arrested on three charges, that of insulting the president, publishing false stories and criminal libel,” added Superintendent Gondwa.

He said the arrest relates to a story published on Malawi Voice, an online publication which said that President Joyce Banda was contemplating on resigning.

He said the journalist would be transferred to Lilongwe.

He will be taken to Lilongwe where his file has been opened but I am not sure which station he will be kept, said superintendent Gondwa.

Meanwhile, the Media Institute for Southern Africa-MISA Malawi chapter said it is monitoring the developments.—Zodiak Online
