Israeli troops could enter Gaza City later today, according to Israeli media, raising the prospect of street fighting with Hamas terrorists hiding in a vast network of tunnels.
Israel Defence Forces spokesman Rear-Admiral Daniel Hagari described the war as reaching a “significant stage”, with Israeli troops also now having reached the coast south of Gaza City.
“Now there exists a south Gaza and a north Gaza,” Hagari said, adding that a route remained open for civilians to flee to the south.
Israeli troops unleashed another overnight bombardment from land, sea and air as Binyamin Netanyahu defied calls for a ceasefire and vowed to continue fighting until hostages held by Hamas are freed.
Explosions lit up the sky above the Palestinian territory from a heavy wave of attacks after local internet and mobile services were completely severed on Sunday.
