Tanzania has spent over 12bn/- in the preparations for the African Development Bank Group meeting taking place in Arusha.
The chairman of the organizing committee, Mr Ngosha Said Magonya stated here that the AfDB meeting should be e ministers representing 54 African and 24 overseas countries. "President Jakaya Kikwete has also invited 10 Heads of State to participate in the meeting. The president himself will grace the meeting on Thursday, May 31, this year.
Mr Magonya who is also the Commissioner for External Finance at the Ministry of Finance said the heavy investment will benefit the country in terms of building its image overseas and boosting local business here. Even before the meeting has started, a total of 50 tourist hotels in Arusha have been filled up and since the properties are located far apart, vehicle owners will record major business in ferrying delegates around the town," said Mr Magonya.
But participants will also visit and assist a number of orphanages and children homes in Arusha, in addition to sampling tourist attraction sites including the Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro. While Tanzania spends over 12bn/- to host the meeting the management of the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) where the event takes place has invested 442m/- for the complex's refurbishment and premises expansion.
"The project included the rehabilitation of the conference and office rooms for the ADB meetings as well as setting up auxiliary meeting podiums, tents for administrative processes and exhibition pavilions and stalls," said the AICC Managing Director, Mr Elishilia Kaaya.
The ADB meeting, in addition to bringing into Tanzania 3,000 participants, will also attract more than 300 international journalists to Arusha where the bank intends to launch new efforts to re-brand the image of the African continent.
Arusha is hosting the 2012 African Development Bank Group (AfDB) Meeting from Monday May 28 to June 2 and the event is set to debate Africa's growth economy and its place in emerging global landscape.
The conference's theme will be 'Africa and the Emerging Global Landscape: Challenges and opportunities. The meeting will also cover the changes that have affected the world including the global financial and economic crisis and a stronger emphasis on green and economic inclusive growth.
Africa, too, is undergoing change, particularly as its economies continue to grow at a faster pace than other parts of the world, while its political situation also changes for the better, with more democracy and good governance. The continent also faces the challenge of providing a better future for its youth, which accounts for some 37 per cent of the population.
Because of the broadness of the annual meetings theme, the AfDB will address the different issues in four high level seminars and a high level debate, attended by some of the most distinguished and finest thinkers on the African economy, African society and the African political landscape.
The subjects of the four high level seminars include, 'Opportunities and Threats of the Global Economic Crisis,' 'Emerging Issues in African Economics,' 'Greening the Economy' and 'Voice and Accountability. The high level debate will be on Innovative Financing of Infrastructure and Regional Integration post the Economic Crisis. These topics will address the
opportunities presented by the changing landscape catapulting African economies as key players in the global market.
