Salaam,
Friedrich Hegel was a 19th c German philosopher who proposed among other things that in any society there is an order (economic, social and political) that will grow to the state of its maximum efficiency while at the same time (slowly) developing its internal contradictions and weaknesses that contributes to its decay (eventually its demise). Hegel used the words thesis, anti-thesis and synthesis to explain his ideas. Throughout human history groups develops its mission (thesis) while subtly working to betray it (anti-thesis) and only to form another mission over time (synthesis).
Well, I would like to be less predictable, but this is not an entertainment, but rather an informative piece that i would to share with some active thinkers here. Im a great admirer of all these great minds of the past, but too lazy to read any of their work, but in these times of political hooplas and the apparent failure of leadership that have put us as a nation in a dangerous crossroads to some unknown destinations, political philosophy can be a good, actually a rewarding read.
Hegel explanations play right to this junction of our political, social and economic history; CCM existence as a ruling political party is nearing its end. What we see inside CCM is the result of systemic internal decay over time as a political party and once considered itself a powerful national institution.
CCM grew to its maximum capacity with confidence and power under Mwalimu and later lesser leaders, while blinding itself of the obvious dangers of not acting as a political party especially after the election of 1995, (thinking itself as indispensable, bigger and important than the nation, and think that Tanzanians are just made to be docile)
Those unfortunate souls within CCM who saw this and tried to correct were silenced, and the CCM "institution" moved on unchanged and only grew more exclusive and abusive and in clear contempt of its common members, and the population as a whole.
And so using Hegels ideas if CCM's Thesis was to be all inclusive party of the people, its massive popularity, and power (or that of its founder), attracted and created elite class of leaders and businessmen who made it exclusive party of the few, which is its anti-thesis and potentially its end as political party unless it finds synthesis and move in a completely new direction.
The good news for many is that CCM as a group will find difficult to find a synthesis (new mission) without first being out of power and being hit with reality that Tanzanians are not as docile as they once thought to be. If Hegel was right on philosophy of History, and if history is the correct tool of making informed speculation about our lives then nothing can save CCM from dying. Only the bad news is that those in CCM will go on to other parties in attempt to protect whatever material souvenirs they had taken using the once almighty CCM.
Mungu ibariki Tanganyika,
