Relief to farmers as country runs first tea auction in historyTEA farmers in the country are expecting to breathe a sigh of relief of the crop as the country plans to run the first tea auction.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, this will spare farmers from participating in Mombasa tea auction in Kenya, hence cutting transportation costs.

“For a long time, farmers had been forced to participate in Mombasa auction, a move that led them to face several challenges including the distance from the tea plantations in the country to the auction in Kenya,” the statement said in part.

It also said that the auction will take place tomorrow at Millenium tower, Dar es Salaam under the supervision of the Tea Board of Tanzania (TBT).TBT Director General, Ms Mary Kipeja said the auction aims to add value to the crop, finding markets as well as sell tea products, adding that the establishment of the auction in the country will reduce the marketing costs facing processors.

She said that the establishment of tea auction in the country will also enable to reduce the cost of transporting the crop almost by half.

“For example, the cost of transporting tea from Tanzania to Mombasa-Kenya will decrease by 50 per cent, a thing that will bring relief to local farmers,” TBT DG underlined.

She added that the auction will also enable to boost the income of tea growers both small and large due to reduction of transportation cost of the produce.

"The income of large and small tea farmers is going to change because the money that was used to transport the produce over long distances to reach the tea market will be used to strengthen the tea plantations and increase the productivity of the tea crop,” he insisted.

Adding: “Since the auction will now be managed and run here in the country, the transparency of the price of tea will increase significantly while the production of tea will also increase.

”Moreover, she said Dar es Salaam and Tanga ports will be the ones that will transport the tea that will be sold at the auction, adding the government will get income from the auction while jobs for Tanzanians will increase.

In a related development, TBT commended the government led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan who has been at the forefront of developing agriculture. For the 2023/2024, budget for the Ministry of Agriculture has increased from 751,123,280,000/- to 970,785,619,000/-, which is an increase of 29.24 per cent.

“I would like to congratulate the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure that the tea industry has a stable trend in the market… among the major results of that trend is Tanzania's initiative to establish a tea auction in the country,” she added.
