Rukwa roads for major facelift

PETI SIYAME in Sumbawanga, 20th October 2009 @ 12:48

THE Government is rehabilitating three major road projects in Rukwa region spanning 657.5 kilometres which will be upgraded to tarmac level.

The projects are scheduled for completion in 2013. Rukwa TanRoads Regional Manager Mr Joseph Nyamhanga said here on yesterday during the first Region Roads Board (RRB) meeting held in Sumbawanga Municipality.

The RRB meeting was also chaired by its Chairperson, Mr Daniel ole Njoolay, who is also Rukwa Regional Commissioner.

Mr Nyamhanga told the meeting that upgrading of 657.5 kilometres to tarmac level would cover roads from Tunduma-Laela- Sumbawanga (224.5 km), Sumbawanga- Namanyere-Mpanda/ Kibaoni (274) and Sumbawanga-Matai-Kasanga Port along Lake Tanganyika and Matai-Kasesya (159).

Mr Nyamhanga said the projects to commence later this financial year would be completed in 2013 According to him, the Tunduma- Laela- Sumbawanga road tendering process has started and that the upgrading to tarmac level is scheduled to take off December, this year.

The project covering 224.5 kilometres has been divided into three sections to expedite the process. These are; Tunduma-Ikana (64 km), Ikana-Laela (64 km) and Laela-Sumbawanga (96.5 km) and that the project will be funded jointly by the government and United States of America through Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

The upgrading to tarmac level of the Sumbawanga- Namanyere-Mpanda-Kizi / Kibaoni road (274 km) two contracts have been signed. They are construction of Sumbawanga-Chala-Kanazi (Namanyere) road covering 75 kilometres and which has been contracted to Jianqxi Geo-Engineering (Group) Corparation at a cost of 78.84 bn/-.

The upgrading of Kanazi (Namanyere) to Kizi - Kibaoni (76.6 km) is estimated to cost over 82.84 bn/- upon completion and has been contracted to China Hunan Construction Engineering Group Corporation, according to Mr Nyamhanga. He added that the project would be funded wholly by the government.

Mr Nyamhanga said further that the major rehabilitation of trunk and regional roads under performance-based management of roads (PMMR) in line with government efforts to ensure that those roads are passable throughout the year was progressing well.

Also section of Muze- Kilyamatundu (144 km) that was impassable for many decades has now been opened up and passable throughout following rehabilitation work which was done with funds from the Danish government through DANIDA worth 683.9m/-.

The rehabilitation of the major roads will make them gateway to the neighbouring countries of Congo DRC and Zambia and it will greatly ease transport problems in the area.
