The Zanzibar government is negotiating with a power generation firm based in Israel, to produce electricity from sea waves.
Isles Water, Construction and Lands, Tafana Kassim Mzee said this at the ongoing House of Representatives meeting here yesterday when responding to a question from Ali Abdalla Ali, (Mfenesini, CCM) who demanded clarification on efforts by the government to address the problem of power.
He said the project would soon be introduced in Pemba.
He added that experts from Israel had carried out feasibility studies in the area and discovered the huge potential on sea wave power production project.
The government is currently working on the report prepared by the power firm for implementation. I led a special delegation to Israel where we learnt about the functioning of a similar project.
Three sources of power will be installed in Zanzibar. They include wind, sea waves and residue whose experts from Germany are negotiating with the government, Mzee informed the House.
Furthermore, the government intended to have in place thermo power generation, explained the deputy minister, saying the aim was to ensure supply incase of failure of the national power grid from the Mainland.
However, the House was further informed that the intermittent power blackouts were due to various reasons including, wearing out of the supply infrastructure and accidental short-circuiting of power lines.
