Tanzania's Human rights activist barred from Meeting in Canada

Tanzania's Human rights Activist and mineral resource advocate Amani Mustapha Mhinda was yesterday amongst global human rights activists barred from speaking out against injustices in the minerals sector at a high-level meeting in Canada.
Renown for his un-relentless campaigns against human rights abuses and violations within the mining sector in Tanzania, Mr. Amani who heads HAKIMADINI, a pro-active rights-based organization in Arusha is in Toronto Canada to protest against violations of poor communities living around mining sectors by multi-billion mining investors.

His on-going protests have taken him to the on-going Shareholders convention by international mining giant Barrick Gold whose mining interests transverse Africa and South America.
Dorning HAKIMADINI's mission to strengthen the capacity of artisinal/small scale miners and the local community to engage and benefit from Tanzania's mineral wealth and to defend their basic human rights within this process, Mr. Amani was determined to affirm this in the Barrick Gold meeting.
He was however barred from entering the premises of the convention hosted by Barrick Gold.
Mr. Amani was quoted by Canadian newspaper The Canadian National Newspaper affirming the legitimacy of his protest by sighting a tragedy back in Tanzania as a result of destructive mining practices.

"As part of civil society movement in Tanzania and citizens of Tanzania we would like an end to atrocities and human rights abuses which has come to be associated with Canadian mining investments . I am here to represent Ms. Otaigo, who died in April because she drank poisonous water next to Barrick's North Mara Mines," Mr. Amani is reported to have said.

He further condemned the move by Barick Gold to deny him entry into the meeting as a "clear cover-up for the human rights abuses the company and many other investors responsible for to the destruction of the local communities".

It is reported that other Human Rights advocates from different parts of the world who were able to access the meeting took the chance to advocate for the rights of local communities amidst exploitation by multi-billion mining investors.

Despite being barred from the meeting, Amani and other advocates were able to tell their stories to a crowd of people outside the meeting who had gathered for the Barick Gold AGM protest.

Barrick Gold is the world's largest gold mining company, founded and chaired by Peter Munk. Former Canadian Prime Minister sits on the board of Barrick Gold amongst other Canadian executives. The Company enjoys government funding and diplomatic surppot. Barrick Gold is based in Toronto, Canada while Africa Barrick is a UK-based company that is 70% owned by Barrick Gold.

Thanks alot Mr Amani,

Your efforts and patriotism are much appreciated!

The problems the Tanzanians are facing all around the Mines and throughout the Mineral industry is from within our own poor Government's management, lack of accountability and patriotism rather than the Investor's side.

If we could uproot those fishy contracts, malicious agreements and illegal (King Lobengula's style) consignment which have been pivoted by our myopic leaders, then Mr Amani Mustapha would have an easy way forward. But those big men in Canada are enjoying idiotic, selfish and narrow-centered-mentality of our leaders! We are done, unless we un-do our wrong-doings already made within, our struggle to rescue our people, small miners and the rest would take decades to move on the single step ahead!
