Abu Dhabi funds $75m Highway Project in Tanzania
Construction on the Abu Dhabi funded Kidahwe Uvinza highway in Tanzanian began on Wednesday, with the laying of the foundation stone by President Jakaya Kikwete and the UAE ambassador to Tanzania Mallalla Mubarak Al Ameri.
Financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, the $75m highway project will help boost the economy of the Kigoma region in the Eastern African country.
Besides being used for commuting between important cities within Tanzania, the highway will link up with neighbouring countries like Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, bolstering the scope for business and commercial activities.
President Kikwete told local media that he was grateful to the UAE, represented through ADFD, for the development aid it had extended towards Tanzania.
In February of this year, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development announced that it had committed $350m over seven years to support renewable energy projects in developing countries, under the guidance of IRENA.
