Tanzania keen on Kenyan polls

Tanzania is keenly watching Kenya as she inches toward the March 4 general election, says Zitto Kabwe, Tanzania's Deputy leader of opposition.

Mr Kabwe expressed that Tanzania is disappointed with the turn that political pacts are taking.

"We are disappointed that alliances are being formed on tribal lines," said Kabwe.

He added that in Tanzania such moves would be a death card for any politician since the country shuns tribalism.

Speaking on Thursday at Standard Group's offices on Mombasa Road when he paid a courtesy call, Kabwe stated that Kenya is a key trade partner of Tanzania and thus the events in Kenya are of importance to his country.

Kabwe, who is the MP for Kigoma North, expressed concern that tribal tendencies could find their way to the neighbouring country.

Citing the secessionist calls by Mombasa Republican Council which have been echoed by groups in Zanzibar as example, he said that occurrences in Kenya could spread to other areas in the East African region.

Addressing leaders, he encouraged them to embrace issue-based politics and shun the dangerously divisive politics of tribe.

"We are watching Kenya closely… We wouldn't like to see what happened in Kenya on 20007 again," said Kabwe.

Though reluctant to speak on the ICC cases facing Presidential aspirants Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto, Kabwe expressed that the same could not take place in Tanzania.

"If that happened in Tanzania-even if it was a civil case, one could not stand for even a parliamentary seat," he commented.

Regional integration

Kabwe, who serves as Finance shadow minister, expressed that he fully supports region integration in East Africa. He also said that Kenya is a key business partner, and Tanzania has benefited greatly from trade between the two countries.

Responding to a query about xenophobia that has been leveled against Kenyans working in Tanzania, he blamed the discrimination on anti-integration groups who are serving their personal interests.

He added that there is still a lot of work to be done in integration of the East African community, especially at the grassroots level.

...and the second large investor in Tanzania, after the UK. I second the integration, let's go ahead with it.

Why party coalitions are about tribe, ego

By Standard on Saturday Team

KENYA: Leaders planning to contest the presidency in the 2013 General Election have come under fire for sidelining national voter groups in their coalition talks.

They stand accused of working to keep themselves and groups of political and ethnic elite happy by securing positions to be shared out after the poll. They have also been faulted for failing to strengthen their political parties into viable democratic institutions.

Voter groups like the youth, women, farmers, workers, civil servants and the like have all had to take a back-seat in a conversation about 42 tribes, dominated by a few.

"It is unlikely we will see issue-based politics at this point," says one Church leader, expressing disappointment at the focus on so-called "community interests" with just three months to go to the March 4 election.

The National Council of Churches of Kenya says the approach taken by local political leaders is "too ethnicised". The same complaint has been raised by politicians in other East African countries who fear the tribal tactics used to create Kenyan alliances may be adopted elsewhere, leading to weaker political parties and greater instability.

"The challenge to democracy in Africa is… the use of identity politics to promote narrow tribal interests," he says. "In the absence of efforts to build political parties to compete on the basis of ideas, many African countries have reverted to tribal identities as the basis for political competition. Tribal practices are filling a vacuum created by lack of strong democratic institutions."

Observers say political deals in mature democracies like the United Kingdom are often centered on key issues. For example, a proposal to have the Conservative Party, led by PM David Cameron, secure 30 seats by working with an anti-European Union party in the country's next election is being fought by party leaders because it would require agreeing to a referendum on whether to remain in the EU.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference."
