Meanwhile, it was announced yesterday that the Speaker of the Ninth House of Representatives will be elected on Wednesday.
The Clerk of the House of Representatives, Mr Yahya Khamis Hamad, said the Speaker would be elected when the House convenes for the first time. The Speaker’s first task after being sworn in would be to preside over the swearing in of members elected in the March 20 repeat elections.
“Our first meeting, which is to start on March 30, will choose the Speaker, and we have so far received the name of only one candidate from the Zanzibar Electoral Commission,” Mr Hamad said.
He named the contestant as Mr Zubeir Ali Maulid, who was last week picked by CCM to vie for the seat. Mr Hamad added that his office had so far received the names of 54 elected representatives and 22 special seats members.
The Zanzibar President is empowered to nominate a maximum of ten members, but has yet to appoint any.
“The 76 representatives whose names we have received so far will be sworn in as we await the President to nominate more members,” Mr Hamad said.
He added that the first sitting would also elect five representatives to the National Assembly.
