Zambian President, Edgar Lungu has seemingly given up in the fight against the coronavirus after he “prematurely” relaxed key measures that were put in place to fight the killer virus.
In his national address on Friday, President Lungu announced the reopening of gyms, cinemas, restaurants and casinos saying it is time Zambians learnt to live with the new normal.
President Lungu also ordered pupils in examination classes to return to school. The announcement was made after Zambia had recorded 14 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total to 167. He said:
The “new normal” means living with COVID-19 just like we have lived with other diseases such as malaria, HIV and Aids, and tuberculosis, provided we adhere to the prescribed health guidelines, regulations and certification for COVID-19.
In embracing “the new normal-living with COVID-19”, let us continue to vigorously fight this disease and not become
complacent.
This comes in after The government of Zambia announced that from Monday May 11, it will be closing its border with Tanzania banning any movement into and out of both countries. This was following a vigorous testing of corona virus disease in the country where 76 people from the border town of Nakonde tested positive. Nakonde is located at the Zambia - Tanzania border. Zambia recorded 85 confirmed cases of covid-19 disease on Saturday May 9th whereby 76 cases were from the Nakonde town.
While announcing the new directives, health minister of Zambia Dr. Chitalu Chilufya noted that this was only a temporary measure as they monitor the situation and will also give them time to retrain their staffs.
“I would like to announce that effective Monday 11th May; we will be closing our Nakonde border. No traffic will be allowed in or out the country through that border. We will keep monitoring the situation and advise accordingly in due course. The government will also be retraining health care workers during this period,” said health minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya during a press briefing.
At the same time Madagascar has call for South Africa's help in examining the covid-19 cure they found. South Africa shall perform according to their request in scientific analysis of the herbal portion COVID Organics. Let's all experience it if it is a fake portion or the real one. We are relying on you South African Scientists to please follow all the prescribed steps to perform this task respectfully and humbly. What can we be without our fellow countries who always stood up for one another through thick and thin. South Africa has expressed their willingness in helping Madagascar to analyze the herbal portion.
Zweli Mkhize the health minister confirmed their call from Madagascar's government who asked for help with scientific research.
"Our Scientists would be able to assist in the research. We will only get involved in a scientific analysis of the herb", Mkhize said.
