Give us proof, not your take.............25% of KQ is bigger than 100% of ATCL anyway.Egypt: Kenya Airways takes delivery of first Dreamliner in Afreximbank-arranged transaction
by African Manager - Apr 1, 2014
Kenya Airways has taken delivery of its first Boeing 787-800 “Dreamliner” aircraft in Seattle, US, with the start of the execution of the second phase of a US$1.9 billion aircraft purchase transaction arranged by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the bank said in a statement obtained by PANA here Tuesday.
It said the phase involves the delivery of 10 Boeing aircraft, comprising nine 787-800 “Dreamliners” and one 777-300ER jet, to Kenya Airways as part of the 20-aircraft purchase transaction for which Afreximbank is the mandated lead arranger.
During the first phase, which ended in November 2013, Afreximbank delivered 10 Embraer-190 aircraft to the airline as part of a delivery schedule that began in August 2012.
The Boeing delivery financing, for which Afreximbank is the global coordinator, comprises a senior US-Exim guaranteed tranche and a commercial tranche.
Afreximbank is also acting as the arranger and underwriter of the commercial tranche, while Citigroup Global Markets, Inc. and JP Morgan Chase Bank, N.A. are the arrangers for the senior US-Exim guaranteed tranche.
“Afreximbank is committed to supporting transactions that further Africa’s integration,” said Jean-Louis Ekra, President of the Bank.
“Kenya Airways has established itself a leading airline on the continent. We are confident that this delivery will enable it to strengthen and expand its route network and, as such, bring about increased business connectivity across the continent.”
In May 2012, Kenya airways mandated Afreximbank to arrange the financing for the 10 Embraer-190 and 10 Boeing aircraft under a package consisting of pre-delivery payments facilities to fund advance payments to Boeing and Embraer, the aircraft manufacturers, and aircraft delivery facilities to fund the deliveries.
The transaction is part of the first phase of Kenya Airways’ fleet upgrade and a key component of its 10-year business plan for the period 2012 to 2021.
The Cairo-based Afreximbank, the foremost Pan-African multilateral financial institution devoted to financing and promoting intra- and extra-African trade, has approved almost US$30 billion in credit facilities for African businesses.

Hahahaha ATCL Meeeee! Meeeee! Minofu ya mbuzi toka mwanza hadi DarWalishindanisha air Swiss, Korean Air na Air Tanzania livery on the tail Twiga akashinda!
ATCL owns Zero Planes. The GoT owns the planes bought using soverign funds and leases them to ATCL making a handsome profit for taxpayers. Should ATCL not pay the due rates, the planes can be leased to any other airline for profit or the GoT can simply sell the planes.I dont know why someone would boast to buy 3 planes from a govt loan and brush off KQ buying 20 even if on loan for $1.9b. Which organisation is stupid enough to buy 20 planes cash with an amount twice its annual revenue? Its stupid to tie up your own cash in fixed assets and affect cash flow just for an ego trip. Tie up a banks money in the planes, use them make a profit higher than the repayments and that is called business. Running of a big plane isnt cheap, they say it takes $5300 to run a 787 per hour. No wonder hio dreamliner ya ATCL iko kenye hangar, bila ya kuijaza waabiria ni loss tupu ikitoka hangar.
Najua ATCL wenyewe wana lipa serikali pesa hizo zilizotumiwa kumiliki ndege tatu.
Mbona GoK isi-issue loan kwa KQ mpaka iende Afreximbank? GoT bought planes on her money n leased them to Air Tanzania. No way u can compare that deal to a monkey deal to KQ. Meanwhile waiting for another half year report after this!I dont know why someone would boast to buy 3 planes from a govt loan and brush off KQ buying 20 even if on loan for $1.9b. It is good news to make us keep up continuing to build the standard gauge railways and buying more air planes. VIVA TZIn Summary
- The bank’s Logistic Performance Index (LPI) released yesterday ranks Kenya at position 42 globally after it scored an average score of 3.33 points.
- By comparison, the survey ranks Uganda and Tanzania at positions 58 and 61 respectively. Uganda has an average score of 3.04 while Tanzania has 2.99. Mind u in 2nd half Burundi, South Sudan n Somalia all blocked KQ from using KQ on their routes. I am pretty sure the loss will be over $40mln!
Ofcourse, they should not be compared. ATCL owns nothing while KQ has negative net assetsIn that case atcl shouldn't be compared with KQ. It owns nothing while the latter owns a lot of plns and leases some
Aa wapii ati Tel Aviv in March!ATCL is fully govt owned, KQ is not, its a private entity with govt owning afew shares. That is a big diffrence. Why would the govt tie up $1.9b of its money to buy planes for a private company?
And there is a matter of scale you are ignoring. Our developing country's Govts can buy 3 planes, its only a few million dollars, but when it reaches $1.9b thats another level that you let big development oriented banks banks play so that you do not divert money from roads and health to help a single industry. Seems like something wise to do. Even TZ govt that collects $6b a year wont go giving $1.9b to ATCL, or can it?
Not sure where you get that news from but the blocked flights were not a block but the said countries wanted 737 or embraes and not q400 to serve them. They are already served by the jets, its change of plane type to cheaper one to reduce fares that they did not want. KQ continues to serve these countries.
Somalia flights started long time ago on Dec 18, keep up in news, uko nyuma sana.
Kenya Airways launches direct flights to Somalia : The Standard
Tel aviv coming up in March. More Revenue!!
Drimulaina imetoka storage? ATCL should not be compared with KQ, maybe Jambo jet. Even local private airlines in Kenya like Fly540 and Skyward do better than ATCL
ila gharama zimepotoshwa!
