Tanzania signed an agreement with the World Bank for a $310 million (496-billion shilling) loan to improve governance, strengthen the agricultural sector and fund other projects, Tanzania's Daily News reported Wednesday (December 12th).

The funds to be disbursed over a 40-year period will go towards a variety of projects, with a majority of the money going to the Urban Local Government Strengthening Programme (ULGSP), according to World Bank Country Director Phillipe Dongier.

The funding aims to improve the performance of 18 local governments in delivering services to about 2.6 million people. Funds for the UGLSP can also be used to improve infrastructure such as roads, markets, solid waste management and public spaces, Dongier said.

The funding for the Agricultural Sector Development Programme will enable farmers to have better access to advanced farming technology and marketing systems. The goal is to increase food production in 20 regions and provide seeds and fertilisers to about 300 farmers through the Tanzania National Agricultural Input Voucher System.

Minister of Finance William Mgimwa thanked the World Bank for its generous donation and offered his reassurance that funds would be spent according to the agreement.
