The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) is a true historical adventure horror film about the two lions that attacked and killed workers at Tsavo, Kenya during the construction of the Uganda-Mombasa Railway in 1898.
Apparently, the film was shot at Songimvelo Game Reserve in South Africa, rather than in Kenya. It features Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer, but many Maasai characters were portrayed by South African actors.
However, the Maasai depicted during the hunt were portrayed by real Maasai warriors who were hired and taken to South Africa for the movie.
Why the film was shot in South Africa rather than in Kenya? If a similar film was to be made to day, would be shot be in another country rather than Kenya for the same reasons?
