Niko na Few Question baada ya kuwakumbusha....https and http..what is the different?

Siku tatu nne zilizo pita nimepata tatizo la 'log in' kwenye gmail server ku access my Gmail account kila ni 'log in' napata Error messege operation aborted, someone akanishauri niweke "s' mbele ya http so that it can look like this https..hapo ikakubali lakini gmail chat ikawa hola haikubali

Is there anyone here know why?

https (Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer) is a URI scheme used to indicate a secure HTTP connection. It is syntactically identical to the http:// scheme normally used for accessing resources using HTTP. This is a very good and interesting question.

HTTPS access
By default, Gmail uses an unencrypted connection to retrieve user data, encrypting only the connection used for the login page. However, by changing the URL from http://mail.google.com/mail/ to https://mail.google.com/mail/, Gmail can be told to use a secure connection, reducing the risk of third-party eavesdropping on users' information, such as emails and contacts, which are transmitted in plaintext as JavaScript data in the page source code. You may find that Gmail is considerably slower over the HTTPS connection, because browsers do not cache these pages and must reload the code that makes Gmail work each time you change screens.

May be useful to others, I am quoting Dan Kibler, from the links I gave above,

I can't leave this alone as it came up near the top of a google search.

This method will not encrypt your messages as they traverse the internet between google and their final destination. It will only encrpt the traffic between your computer and the google server.

For real security you must encrypt the message at the source and decrypt it at the final destination.

The difference.

If you've seen an "https" in the URL address of a website, you might have wondered what it stands for and you also see another URL known as http.

So http stands for "Hyper Text Transfer Protocol", the primary technology protocol on the Web that allows linking and browsing.

And https is "Hyper Text Transfer Protocol" with an added dash of "s", or Secure Sockets Layer, another protocol primarily developed with secure, safe Internet transactions in mind-meaning you know whta you are up to.

So when you navigate to a site such as Amazon or eBay and you go to pay for something, either through a secure shopping cart or an outside payment system such as Paypal, you should see the address in your browser address bar change significantly if the site you have arrived at is a https site, because the https in front of the URL indicates that you are now in a "secure session."

For instance, you log into your gmail account on the Web. You will have to enter in a user name and password, and then after that you'll see your account info. Pay attention the next time you do this, and check the address bar at the top of your browser. It should indicate that you are now in a secure session with the addition of "https" at the front of the URL.

Gmail are using this method in order to show you that their site is safe and you should seek assistance whenever you get stuck somewhere.

For added security, always log out of any secure session when you're done, and especially if you are on a public computer.
