Arsène Wenger has identified Arsenal's key weakness this season -defending long balls.

Wenger has already acknowledged that his team have "lacked a little bit of maturity" at times this season, notably when they surrendered the advantage in big games against Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. At the shareholders Q&A this week, the Frenchman was more specific.

"I must say this year we had among the best attack but [with one game to go] we have conceded 31 goals which is six or seven too many," he said. "It's as close as that to win the championship.

"We didn't give more goals away than any other team in the League on open play, nor on set pieces, but where we gave more goals away was on direct balls, in the air, through the middle, and most of the time on second balls"

MATHIEU FLAMINI admitted last night he might have stayed with Arsenal if they had won the Premier League.
The French midfielder, who will go to AC Milan in July, said: "That would have weighed in the balance. It would certainly have counted.
"I actually wanted to sign a new contract at Arsenal last July but it didn't happen. AC Milan did so much to sign me I couldn't refuse."
Flamini spoke exclusively for the first time of the dilemma that faced him and the frustration that now threatens the future of Gunners stars like Alexander Hleb and Emmanuel Adebayor.
Painful
Flamini said: "What happened to us after leading the League for so long was the most painful experience I had during four years at Arsenal.
"It has hurt terribly to have invested so much of yourself, to have given everything, to have gone beyond pain and to fall short in the end.
"I hope with all my heart that Arsenal win the title next year. And I would love to play against them in the Champions League Final next year."

GLORY GUNNERS ... are now all goners

ARSENE WENGER, the most successful manager in Arsenal’s history, has almost totally broken up the most successful team in the club’s history. Gilberto Silva’s £1.5million move to Panathinaikos leaves Kolo Toure as the sole remaining member of Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’.

Wenger’s team of 2003-04 became the first Premiership side to go a full season without a league defeat and the first top-flight team to manage this feat since Preston North End in 1888-89. The glory Gunners went on to claim an astonishing record of 49 games unbeaten, eclipsing the best set by Nottingham Forest.

But now just Ivory Coast international Toure, signed by boss Wenger from ASEC Mimosas for £150,000 in 2002, remains as the only red-shirted reminder of those glory days. Wenger’s timing in getting rid of players has been nothing short of immaculate. Few, if any, have matched what they achieved with Arsenal at their new clubs. Martin Keown was the first to be eased out the door, given a free by Wenger, with Leicester landing the England centre-back in July 2004.

Big hitters like Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires, Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole followed over the next two years — with Dutch superstar Dennis Bergkamp retiring. Then last summer talisman Thierry Henry was shipped off to Barcelona for £16.1million — £5.6m more than Wenger paid for him eight years and 226 goals earlier. Yesterday Alex Hleb joined the exodus by signing for Barcelona for an initial £12m, rising to £13.5m. Belarus midfielder Hleb, bought by Wenger in June 2005 for £10m, has a buyout clause in his Barca contract of £71m.

Wenger 'certain to make signing'

Arsene Wenger has said he is "certain" he will sign at least one more player before the start of the season.

And the Arsenal manager reiterated his belief that Emmanuel Adebayor will remain at the club, despite AC Milan and Barcelona tracking the striker.

"Adebayor is a player of Arsenal. I am very confident he will stay," Wenger told BBC London.

On the possibility of signings, Wenger added that he would make "two maximum but one certainly".

Wenger has seen midfielders Mathieu Flamini, Alexander Hleb and Gilberto leave Arsenal for AC Milan, Barcelona and Panathinaikos respectively this summer, while Samir Nasri and Aaron Ramsey have arrived from Marseille and Cardiff.

Ramsey made his debut for Arsenal as they won 2-1 at Barnet in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, with Jay Simpson and Dutch youngster Nacer Barazite scoring in the second half to cancel out Kenny Gillet's strike for the hosts.

And speaking after the match, Wenger hinted that 17-year-old Ramsey and the squad's other young players could play a key role next season.

"Ramsey did OK. He looked a bit tired because he works very hard, of course it's a big change for him, but he did OK," stated Wenger.

"He is in the plans like all the players today. It depends on the performances and their quality and you could see that some young players could be very close to the first team.
"We had two departures (last week) but two players came in so, number wise, we are level."

Arsenal have been linked with a number of players this summer, notably Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry and Zenit St Petersburg's Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin.
