Ripoti kuhusu watoto na UKIMWI iliyotolewa na Shirika la Kuhudumia Watoto la Umoja wa Mataifa UNICEF, inaonyesha kuwa watoto na vijana karibu 320 wanakufa kila siku kutokana na sababu zinazohusiana na ugonjwa huo.
Chanzo kikubwa cha vifo hivyo ni upatikanaji mdogo wa matibabu ya ARV na ukosefu wa juhudi za kuzuia maambukizi, na asilimia 54 tu ya watoto wenye umri chini ya miaka 14 waishio na VVU katika mwaka 2018 walipata dawa za ARV.
Takwimu zinaonesha kuwa kiwango cha upatikanaji wa matibabu ya ARV kwa watoto waishio na VVU ni asilimia 91 katika bara la Asia Kusini, ikifuatiwa na asilimia 73 katika Mashariki ya Kati na Afrika Kaskazini, asilimia 61 katika Afrika Mashariki na Kusini, na asilimia 28 tu katika Afrika Magharibi na Kati.

A global snapshot on children, HIV and AIDS released by UNICEF recorded that AIDS-related causes claimed the lives of 320 children and adolescents every day or 13 every hour in 2018.
Low access to antiretroviral treatment, in addition to limited prevention efforts, is a leading cause for these deaths, with only 54 per cent of children aged 0-14 living with HIV in 2018 – or 790,000 children – receiving lifesaving antiretroviral therapy.
Data show deep regional disparities in access to treatment among children living with HIV. Access is highest in South Asia, at 91 per cent, followed by the Middle East and North Africa (73 per cent), Eastern and Southern Africa (61 per cent), East Asia and the Pacific (61 per cent), Latin America and the Caribbean (46 per cent) and West and Central Africa (28 per cent).
Mothers’ access to antiretroviral therapy to prevent the transmission of the virus to their babies has increased globally, reaching 82 per cent, up from 44 per cent less than 10 years ago, according to the report.
“While we still have a long way to go, giving more and more pregnant women antiretroviral treatment to prevent mother-to-child transmission has helped avert about 2 million new HIV infections and prevented the deaths of over 1 million children under five years old,” said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore.
