KIZIMKAZI coastal villagers in Unguja South Region are up in arms over the big number of families abandoned by the bread winners allegedly due to their men being enticed by women from the mainland.
Many women who are now single parents in the village have to contend with burden of caring for children while their male partners isolate their families, with some marriages ending in divorce.
Mrs Jina Ali recently led a number of her fellow villagers in blaming women from Tanzania mainland for 'stealing' their husbands.
"We are desperate, our husbands abandon us with children and set up new homes in fishing camps or shift entirely to the Mainland after finding new partners," Jina lamented.
In efforts to minimize the desertion incidence, about 50 women turned out on streets to demonstrate and express their grievances, urging the local authorities to take action.
