The kidnappers who are holding hostage six Tanzanian Muslim clerics are demanding a ransom of between $20,000 and $40,000 (Sh42 million and Sh84 million), according to sources from the Congolese Islamic Community (Comico).

The preachers and their Congolese driver are believed to be held in Rutshuru forest in North Kivu province in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Comico coordinator El Hadji Masudi told international news agencies that the kidnappers were demanding $20,000 (Sh42 million) to free the hostages.

Contacted for comment, the head of communication at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ms Mindi Kasiga, said the government had learnt reports of the ransom demand through the media.

"Just like you, I have learnt of the information through the media. Our ambassador in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr Anthony Cheche, is working closely with international organisations," she said.

Ms Kasiga said the government was determined to see the clerics being freed and returning home to their families.

Their kidnappers are believed to be Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels.

The FDLR, a Hutu rebel group from neighbouring Rwanda, has opposed Tutsi influence in eastern Congo since its formation in 2000.
