South African mob kills migrants

Some 500 police officers have been sent into the township

Police reinforcements have been sent to the South African township of Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, after attacks on foreigners.

Two people were killed and about 40 injured during the attack on Sunday.

A crowd of local people attacked migrants from Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, telling them to leave.Police have arrested 15 people.

People from across the continent have been attracted to South Africa by its relative peace and prosperity.

This has led to an increased number of attacks on migrants by those who say the foreigners are taking local jobs and contributing to crime.

The economic and political crisis in Zimbabwe has lead to an influx of migrants into South Africa.

They raped my sister... I fear for my life

Earlier this year, two foreigners were killed and 1,000 left homeless when their houses were burnt down outside the capital, Pretoria.

Around 600,000 people live in Alexandra township, which attracts migrants from across southern Africa.

The BBC's Mpho Lakaje in Alexandra says mobs chanted "Drive all foreigners away."

Rape and pillage

Many Zimbabweans and Mozambicans occupy shacks and free government houses as they desperately try to make ends meet.

"They took all my money, my stove and other personal possessions," said a woman from Mozambique.

"They went on to rape my sister. I’m going to hide at the police station as I fear for my life."

"They beat us. Two of my brothers are dead," said a Zimbabwean woman.

"We don’t know why they are chasing us away. They didn’t give us any warning."

Neria Malefetse from Johannesburg police said her officers are working to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control.

"I believe that xenophobia exists in South Africa," she says.

"But we need to find other means of dealing with problems than resorting to violence."

President Thabo Mbeki has condemned the acts of violence.

Inasikitisha.

This is very sad indeed.
We are all capable of evil but what is happening in S.A is horrifying!

The rape capital of the world, they say

The average South Africans are using foreigners as scapegoats for their deep rooted problems. The SA gov. should be more vigorous and implement stern measures to stop this kind of injustice.

Scapegoat --- The word is more widely used as a metaphor, referring to someone who is blamed for misfortunes, generally as a way of distracting attention from the real causes.

I had to check it up on the encyclopedia.

I do not buy this argument.......there is nore in this than mambo ya chumbani.
Hapo ndipo wanapochanganyikiwa..........mgeni mweusi ndie anayekuwa "bangusilo"!

Tatizo ni Waafrika Ndivyo Tulivyo!!!

Is this desperation, frustrations or lunacy? Out of all people in the whole world, you would least expect these black south african to behave like this to their own brothers and sisters who were always there for them during their struggle against apartheid. Naona wanasahau walikotoka kabisa.

Violence spreads in Johannesburg
BBC News Online

Scenes of violence on the streets of Johannesburg
At least 12 people have been killed in the South African city of Johannesburg since Friday in a wave of violence directed at immigrants, police say.

Police have used tear gas and rubber bullets to try to stop gangs of armed youths from attacking foreigners and looting and burning their property.

Five people were killed overnight in the area of Cleveland. Two of them were burned and the others beaten to death.

More than 50 were taken to hospitals with gunshot and stab wounds.

During the day, a church where about 1,000 Zimbabweans have been taking refuge was attacked.

Bishop Paul Veryn of the Central Methodist Church which was attacked told SABC radio: "We consider that the situation is getting so serious that the police can no longer control it."

As night fell, immigrants were streaming into one police station near downtown Johannesburg carrying whatever belongings they could, reports Caroline Hawley.

Many now fear for their lives, she reports. One Zimbabwean woman told the BBC she would flee back home rather than risk losing her two children to the mobs.

Foreigners have been trying to flee the violence

The trouble began a week ago in the sprawling township of Alexandra. Immigrants from neighbouring African countries were set upon by men with guns and iron bars chanting "kick the foreigners out".

Terrified Zimbabweans, Mozambicans and Malawians fled to the safety of the local police station and to another township, Diepsloot.

They were then attacked there as well - shacks were burnt down and shops looted. The violence has since spread to other areas.

Since the end of apartheid, millions of African immigrants have poured into South Africa seeking jobs and sanctuary. But they have become scapegoats for many of the country's social problems - its high rate of unemployment, a shortage of housing and one of the worst levels of crime in the world.

Police have been trying to restore order in Diepsloot township

The South African Red Cross is now providing food and blankets to hundreds of frightened immigrants forced from their homes.

President Thabo Mbeki said he would set up a panel of experts to investigate the violence.

The leader of the governing African National Congress, Jacob Zuma, condemned the attacks.

"We cannot allow South Africa to be famous for xenophobia," he told a conference in Pretoria.

Foreigners flee as Johannesburg clashes toll hits 22
53 minutes ago

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) — Thousands of foreigners sought refuge at crowded community centres and police stations in Johannesburg on Monday amid new attacks in a wave of xenophobic violence that has killed 22 people.

Mobs roaming through poor townships around South Africa's economic capital have killed and beaten up immigrants over the past week, with Zimbabweans and other Africans reporting purges by armed locals looking for foreigners.

Crowds of people gathered at community centres and police stations in affected parts of the Johannesburg area -- mainly the notorious central downtown area and slum areas to the east of the city....

kaaazi kweli kweli...

Toll rises in South Africa unrest

South Africa's townships have been seized by a wave of anti-foreign violence [Reuters]

At least 13 immigrants have been killed as a wave of anti-foreign violence spreads across South Africa's townships.

Hundreds of people, many from Zimbabwe, sought refuge on Monday, as mobs set their homes on fire and the toll from xenophobic violence grew.

Residents were forced to flee as their homes were set alight in Reiger Park on Johannesburg's East Rand, where one man was set on fire on Sunday.

Police patrolled the township as large gangs stood around pelting them with stones and barricading roads...
