President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday left for the United States for a three-day state visit at the invitation of President George W. Bush, the Director of Presidential Communications, Mr Salva Rweyemamu, has said. Mr Rweyemamu said in a statement issued in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the visit was aimed at enhancing bilateral ties on education, health and economic fields.

On his first day, President Kikwete would attend an event of a fund dealing with education among Black Americans and Africans called Phleps Stokes Fund. He said that during the occasion, the president would talk on the state of education in Tanzania, achievements and challenges the sector was facing.

Mr Rweyemamu said the president would later attend a meeting at the Centre for Global Development on health sector, particularly on how to fight and eliminate malaria. He said during the meeting, the United States would announce more assistance in fighting malaria in Tanzania.

The president will also go to US Congress where an official announcement will be made on construction of an international wildlife university to be known as International Conservation College in Arusha. On the second day, Mr Rweyemamu said, President Kikwete would visit USAID Headquarters. USAID will provide 20 million US dollars (over 20bn/-) aid for agricultural development and food security.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Mr Bernard Membe, would sign agreements with the United States for assistance on supervision of water and energy sectors, through Energy and Water Utility Regulatory Authority (EWURA). The president will also take part in discussions on several issues on education. The US would announce its support to the sector.

Mr Rweyemamu said the aid would include science textbooks worth 1.5 million US dollars and another 500,000 US dollars for training teachers and construction of three laboratories for teaching English language. The president will also meet prominent investors in the United States. On his third day of the visit, the president will hold official talks with his host, President Bush at the White House.

Later on President Kikwete will proceed to the National Press Centre where United States will announce more aid to Tanzania on health sector, particularly on the fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic and other diseases. The United States would sponsor construction of two new modern children centres and assist Tanzania to improve the fight against the diseases.

In the evening, the president will attend a basketball match of Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) league, between Washington Mystics and Chicago Sky at Veriton Centre. During the match, 'Basketball Diplomacy' will be announced to start working next month when a delegation of basketball stars from United States would visit Tanzania.
