Pro-Russian Claims to Have Won Referendum on Ukrainian Territory
Pro-Russian officials in four Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories claim they have won a referendum on a merger with Russia. It is known, Russia plans to annex the occupied territory of Ukraine through a referendum.
The local pollster in the southern Zaporizhzhia region said 93.11 percent of voters voted for Russia’s annexation after all the ballots had been counted. However it is said that this is an early result.
In Kherson, also in the south, authorities said 87.05 percent of voters voted for Russia’s annexation after the vote count was completed.
In the eastern Lugansk region controlled by pro-Russian separatists, 98.42 percent voted for annexation by Russia, Russian news agencies said, citing local authorities.
“It is clear” that Lugansk will return to Russia, Leonid Pasechnik, leader of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic, said on Telegram.
In the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, the polling agency said 99.23 percent of voters voted for Russia’s annexation after all ballots had been counted, according to news agencies.
Denis Pushilin, leader of the Kremlin-backed separatists in Donetsk, said: “We all wanted this for a very long time”, according to Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti.
He welcomed what he called a “colossal” result, saying: “We are reunited with our great motherland, with great Russia”.
Meanwhile, the UN said it was “committed” to Ukraine’s “territorial integrity” within its “recognized” borders.
Results Announced September 30 by Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to announce the annexation of Ukrainian territories to join the Russian Federation on September 30. Putin will make the announcement in a speech before the Russian parliament.
As reported by Reuters and The Guardian, Tuesday (27/9), the estimate was delivered by the British Ministry of Defense in the latest intelligence information released Tuesday (27/9) local time.
“President Putin is scheduled to address both houses of the Russian parliament on Friday, September 30. There is a realistic possibility that Putin will use his speech to officially announce the accession of occupied Ukrainian territories into the Russian Federation,” the British Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
“Russian leaders almost certainly hope that any announcement of accession will be seen as a reinstatement of the name ‘special military operations’ and will consolidate patriotic support for the conflict,” the statement said.
