Underwear for Africa. Really? You're collecting underwear? We know it sounds silly. But the answer is YES! In 2006 we found out from GVN's Kenyan coordinator, that underwear is a luxury to have. Underwear is expensive, $12 for a pack of 5. That might not sound much, but the reality is, when you are making $1 a day, underwear is last on the list. And if you are an orphan, well, unless it's donated, you don't have any.

It was easy to make the decision that Underwear would be a priority on our list to bring to Kenya. In 2007, over 1700 pairs were passed out to schools and orphanages outside of Nairobi, Kenya. In 2008, another 1000 pairs were distributed to two IDP camps. In April 2009, over 2000 pairs were passed out to various IDP camps and orphanages once again.

The need is so great. The article, "‘Undignified' underwear the only choice for Kenya's poor, is just more proof that we need to scream from the rooftops, "GIVE US UNDERWEAR!" Our goal is to collect new, unopened packs of children's and young adults underwear (ages 3-15). We will then distribute them throughout Africa. We want you to be armed with all the necessities to have your own drive.

We have created a couple of flyers for you to use. There is a DONATE HERE flyer to place on a donation container, and a GOT UNDERWEAR? flyer to pass around to friends and family or to put up in the lunchroom at work. We have also supplied you with an email message to send to everyone in your address book. This will help you get the word out. There is a widget that you can put on your own personal blogs as well. Just copy and paste the code below and add it to your page.

Please send NEW and UNOPENED packages of Girls and Boys size 3-18 underwear to:

Sina lakusema!

Is that really a priority? Katika vitu vyote vya life and death wanavyoweza kusaidia wameona underwear?

This mockery of Africa dignity in the guise of do-gooding cannot pass without the most strenuous protest. It would be funny if it wasn't so tragically caricaturing. What is the difference between these types of chicanery and those carried 100 years ago with the licentious and condescending assumption that Africans are of inferior minds and need to be saved both materially and spiritually?
