Now more than ever, preventative health care is essential in taking charge of one’s well-being. Through an annual physical exam, people are more informed about the condition of their body, the irregularities or risk factors involved, and how to work towards preventing severe health issues.

Typically, the frequency of one’s visits to the doctor increases with age, but that does not mean that the young, generally healthy men and women are invulnerable. There are still diseases that do not discriminate, so rather than waiting for an illness to strike, a person must have regular checkups to stay well and live as good of a life as possible.

What is a medical checkup?

Also known as a physical exam, a medical checkup is a routine test conducted by a doctor or medical professional to assess a person’s health. Through a series of medical exams, a person would know which parts of the body need more attention to address any symptoms or other health-related concerns with the help of their doctor.

It begins with taking the person’s personal and/or medical history and other relevant information, including previous operations or medical procedures, past and present diseases or health conditions, a list of all current medications, habits, lifestyle, and the like.

A general medical checkup will include the following:
  • an evaluation of the person’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and throat
  • using a stethoscope to examine and listen to the heart, lungs, and bowels
  • checking different parts of the body for unusual lumps in the abdomen, and feeling the lymph nodes in the neck, underarms, or groin
  • getting the person’s height and weight measurements
  • blood pressure checks to know if it is normal, high, or low
  • laboratory tests such as complete blood count (CBC) to check for various conditions, a blood test to check cholesterol and glucose levels, and urinalysis to monitor kidney and urinary tract health
In some cases, a doctor may perform advanced screening or an in-depth diagnostic test—X-rays, computer tomography (CT) scans, electrocardiogram (ECG) or heart activity, cardio stress tests, and the like—depending on the person’s medical history and specific needs.

What are the benefits of a regular medical checkup?
Here are compelling reasons why individuals need to pay their trusted doctors a visit and have their routine physical exam at least once a year.

1. Detect diseases early on

Regular medical checkups allow doctors to pick up signs of diseases that the patients may not even know to exist. With routine screenings, the doctor can diagnose potentially severe or life-threatening conditions and prevent any kinds of risks before it is too late or it takes a turn for the worse.

2. Increase chances of getting better treatment and cure

Some life-threatening diseases can gradually build up in the body even before the physical symptoms manifest. With early detection, a person will have higher chances of getting the right treatment promptly and gain access early on to options that may speed up the recovery process.

3. Keep track of health

One should never neglect their health, and being healthy goes beyond not being sick. Through regular medical checkups, an individual has access to vital information that will help them monitor their physical, mental, and emotional health so that they can take action and make wise decisions for their well-being

4. Reduce healthcare costs over time

Medical costs can skyrocket, especially when one is dealing with a condition that has been detected at a severe or serious stage because it was not diagnosed early on. It is better to invest in regular medical checkups to prevent, avoid, and manage diseases at their early stages.

5. Build a good relationship with doctors and physicians

With regular physical exams and screenings, a person can develop a relationship with their doctor built on mutual trust. This way, it will not be difficult for them to have open and honest conversations about their medical history or conditions, which can help pave the way for more efficient medical management and treatment.

6. Boost lifespan and well-being

A good physician will encourage a patient to be more proactive and take the right steps to stay healthy. This will include recommendations on how to maintain good habits and an overall healthy lifestyle.

Stay on top of your health goals

Consistent medical checkups play an essential role in maintaining overall wellness, peace of mind, and stability in the long run. There is no better time than now to take concrete steps and preventive health measures.

Hayo yote uliyosema ni vigumu kuyafanya kama watu hawana pesa. Pete ni wazekezaji wafungue maduka nk ili watu wapate ajira kwanza. Wakiwa na pesa watawala kujali afya zao.
