Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has been in custody since 25 December

A US grand jury has indicted Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab on six counts over an alleged plot to bomb a plane over Detroit on Christmas Day.

The charges against the 23-year-old include attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted murder of 290 people on board the plane.

Mr Abdulmutallab allegedly tried to detonate a bomb on Northwest flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit.

The plane landed safely after crew and passengers overpowered him.
There were 279 passengers and 11 crew on board.

Mr Abudmutallab allegedly concealed two explosives - PETN and TATP - in his clothing with other ingredients to make a bomb, according to the court document.

The indictment said the bomb was designed for him to detonate at a time of his choosing.

The counts are:
  • attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction
  • attempted murder within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the US
  • wilful attempt to destroy and wreck an aircraft
  • wilfully placing a destructive device in or near an aircraft which was likely to endanger the safety of the aircraft
  • two counts of possession of a firearm, ie the bomb, in furtherance of violent crime.
An arraignment will be held on Friday, where the charges will be read to Mr Abdulmutallab and he will have the opportunity to enter a plea.

Attorney General Eric Holder said that the investigation into the bomb plot was "fast-paced, global and ongoing, and it has already yielded valuable intelligence that we will follow wherever it leads".

"Anyone we find responsible for this alleged attack will be brought to justice using every tool - military or judicial - available to our government," he said.

On Tuesday, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Mr Abdulmutallab had "spent a number of hours with FBI investigators in which we gleaned usable, actionable intelligence".

The alleged bombing attempt prompted airport screening changes in numerous countries, with some moving to introduce body scanners.

US President Barack has strongly criticised US intelligence officials for failing to do more to prevent the plot, saying they knew enough about it but failed "to connect the dots".

US intelligence officials had known that Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which claimed involvement in the plot, had been planning an attack against America.

Mr Obama also said they knew the group had been working with an individual - now known to be Mr Abdulmutallab

Umar Farouk Abdulmuttallab is truely an agent of Lucifer. I cannot imagine how unreasonable a graduate Engineer can be in planning to kill himself and other 289 innocent passengers out of terrorists' indoctrination. What the hell was he going to get after fulfilling his ambition? He looks very stupid indeed!

Nigerian bomb suspect appears in Detroit court

People line up in the cold outside of the federal courthouse to get one of 77 access tickets for the arraignment of suspected terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

DETROIT - The 23-year-old Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas arrived at the Detroit courthouse to hear the charges against him, authorities said.
A dark Chevy Suburban drove into an underground entrance to the downtown courthouse about 10:40 a.m. The vehicle was led and followed by police cars with flashing lights and short siren blasts.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was inside the SUV.

Abdulmutallab will be arraigned on six charges Friday afternoon. The most severe carries up to life in prison - the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

The government said Abdulmutallab tried to blow up an Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight by igniting an explosive under his clothes.

President Barack Obama in remarks on Thursday took ultimate responsibility for security failures that led to the botched bombing and ordered reforms aimed at thwarting future attacks.
Linked to a Yemen-based branch of al-Qaida, Abdulmutallab has been held in a federal prison in Milan, Mich.

Brief hearing

Neither federal prosecutors or Abdulmutallab's court-appointed defense lawyers would comment ahead of the arraignment in Detroit.

The initial hearing could take only several minutes, setting the stage for a trial that legal experts said is weighted heavily in the government's favor given the evidence, including Adbulmutallab's injuries.

"It happened in an enclosed environment, in the air, with many witnesses," said Larry Dubin, a law professor at the University of Detroit Mercy. "Usually prosecutors are not as fortunate having those facts when bringing a case."

Officials were preparing to close off the snow-covered street approaching the federal building and limit the number of observers in court to fewer than 80 witnesses and reporters.

A Nigerian-American group and a coalition of Muslim Americans have announced plans to rally nearby in support of the U.S. government's position.

"Everybody here is concerned about these unfortunate acts and these unfortunate events because they send the wrong message," said Nasser Muhsin, a member of the American Muslim Society in Dearborn, Michigan.

"They put the wrong definition of Islam in people's minds, and that's what we are concerned about," said Muhsin, whose group planned to rally outside the federal court.

DETROIT - A not guilty plea was entered on behalf of a 23-year-old Nigerian man Friday to charges that he tried to blow up a packed U.S. Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab said little during a federal court hearing that lasted less than five minutes. The , who wore a white T-shirt, tennis shoes and khaki pants, said "yes" in English when asked if understood the charges against him.

Abdulmutallab was traveling from Amsterdam when he tried to destroy the Northwest Airlines plane carrying nearly 300 people by injecting chemicals into a package of explosives concealed in his underwear, authorities said. The failed attack caused popping sounds and flames that passengers and crew rushed to extinguish. A grand jury indicted Abdulmutallab on six charges earlier this week. The most severe carries up to life in prison - the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

During Friday's hearing, Abdulmutallab stood at the podium along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Tukel and defense attorney Miriam Siefer and answered a few questions from Magistrate Judge Mark A. Randon.

When the judge asked if he had taken any drugs or alcohol in past 24 hours, he answered, "some pain pills." Siefer then said he was competent to understand the proceedings. Abdulmutallab, who is being held at a federal prison in Milan, Michigan, had been treated at a hospital for burns after the attack.

His attorneys then waived the reading of the indictment, and the judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

It's routine practice in federal court for the defendant to allow the judge to enter a plea on his behalf rather than say anything himself.
