Uganda: PDF soldier imprisoned for 60 years for murdering 8 people and injuring 3 others

At the close of last week, an army court martial sentenced a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier to 60 years in prison for murder and 30 years for attempted murder.

Lance Corporal Moses Katwesigye, 37, was convicted for murdering eight people and injuring three others.

According to prosecution, Katwesigye who was attached to 307 Brigade Barracks at Mburamaizi in Kanungu District killed two soldiers, six civilians and injured three other people in the same area on April 21.

They are; Saverio Byansi, 26, Sarah Auma, 21, Katwesigye’s wife, Maria Musiimenta, 38, Medard Byamukama, 38, Oliver Tindiwensi Tugumisirize, 48, Apohia Kyosimire, 18, Victory Gumoshabe, 7, and Shafi Ndahikire, 32.

Emmanuel Mbarekye, 25, Mr Frank Twongyeirwe, 19, and Dickson Tumuhurire, 19 were injured in the shooting.

The court martial sitting in Kihihi Town Council and chaired by Col Geoffrey Mujuni, in a one-week trial found the soldier guilty of murder and sentenced him to 60 years in government prison.

“The accused is also found guilty in the charge of attempted murder and is sentenced to 30 years in government prison,” Col Mujuni ruled.

Col Mujuni reminded the convict of his right to appeal within 14 days.
