Recently, Turkey opened the new Istanbul airport, which is dubbed to be the biggest airport in the world. Once all the phases are complete, the total area of the airport will be 18,780 acres. According to the reports, the first phase of the airport has been opened to the public and includes three runways and 15 million square feet of terminal space.
The first phase can accommodate up to 90 million passengers a year, but this is only the beginning. The new airport has four phases, which are scheduled to be completed by 2025, and will bump up the airport's capacity to over 200 million passengers a year, making it the biggest airport in terms of passenger traffic. Before this, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport was the busiest airport in the world as it could handle up to 107 million passengers a year.
The opening of the new airport, which sits at a distance of about 35 kilometers from the city center, comes at very good time, as the Istanbul Ataturk Airport ceased operations on April 6, 2019. Until its closing, the Ataturk Airport was considered as one of the busiest airports in the world as it used to handle about 70 million passengers a year. All commercial flights have now been directed to this new airport, which is now officially open for business. However, it should be noted that Ataturk Airport was only two decades old and it became one of the busiest airports in very little time. This can be owed to Turkey's growing position as a global aviation hub, which has come to be due to the increasing popularity of the national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, according to reports.
With that being said, the biggest airport in the world also has some big features that you should make a note of if you ever find yourself there.
The Istanbul New Airport will have Duty-Free shops spread over 55,000 square meters and its architecture is inspired by the Bosphorus strait, a well-known waterway in Turkey. It is set to have seven different sections which will have their own concepts like Fashion Garden, Family Palace and Style Beach. Brands will be put up in the sections that are connected to the products they sell.
