Nigeria's government sent in troops to the flashpoint northern Jos region on Monday after attacks by machete-wielding gangs on Christian villages that officials say killed at least 500 people.

Under fire for failing to prevent another outburst of sectarian violence only weeks after hundreds died in Muslim-Christian clashes, authorities said they had arrested scores of people in connection with the attacks.

Witnesses, meanwhile, described how the mainly women and children victims in Sunday's three-hour systematic orgy of violence were caught in animal traps and fishing nets as they tried to flee their attackers, who hacked them to death.

The official death toll was initially put at a little more than 100, but Dan Manjang, an adviser to the Plateau state government, said the toll had now been raised substantially.

"We have been able to make 95 arrests, but at the same time more than 500 people have been killed in this heinous act," Dan Manjang said in a telephone interview.

Government-run radio also reported that 500 people had been slaughtered in a night raid on three villages on the fringes of Jos, capital of Plateau state.

Witnesses and local rights activists put the figure at more than 200.

"By our latest count there are 202 bodies," said Shamaki Gad Peter, head of the League for Human Rights in Jos.

Shehu Sani, another leading rights activist, spoke of 250 people having been killed.

Much of the violence was centred around the village of Dogo Nahawa, where gangs from the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group set fire to straw-thatched mud huts before embarking on the killing rampage in the early hours of Sunday.

Too sad. Hivi kuna dini inaagiza kuua?

Ndiyo, soma hapa chini.

Quran 48:29: "Those who follow Muhammad are merciless for the unbelievers but kind to each other."

Quran 60:4: We have renounced you; and enmity and hatred is begun between us and you for ever, until ye believe in Allah alone

25:52 So obey not the unbelievers and fight strenuously with them in many a strenuous fight.

Quran 4:91 "Take them and kill them wherever ye find them. Against such We have given you clear warrant."

Quran 33:35-36 "Allah repulsed the disbelievers. ... He brought those of the People of the Scripture who supported them down from their strongholds, and cast panic into their hearts. Some ye slew, and ye made captive some.

Pole sana ndugu yangu.Haya ndio majonzi niliyonayo pia.Just imagine tunauana wenyewe kwa wenyewe kisa - dini zisizo za kwetu!Je tungekuwa na dini zetu za asili hizi laana zingetupata? Sidhani.Maana mwisilamu anasema Im right you are wrong na mkristu anasema hivyo hivyo.

Jesus Christ The Lord, waokoe watu wako. Wanakuhitaji watu wa Nigeria sasa. Tunakuomba uwaokoe kutoka kwenye mikono ya damu. Mungu waonyeshe uwezo wako ili wakujue wewe na hakuna Mungu mwnigine mwenye kustahili kuabudiwa zaidi yako. Mungu uwarehemu waja wako wote. Tunaomba mapenzi yako yatimizwe. Amen!

Local archbishop says religion not at source of conflict in Nigeria

Early morning raids on three villages near Jos, Nigeria by Muslim shepherds on Sunday morning left hundreds of Christian farmers dead. Archbishop John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan of Abuja emphasized on Monday that the source of the unrest is due to socio-economic concerns, not religion.

In an interview with Vatican Radio, the archbishop called the confrontations "the classic conflict between shepherds and farmers."

It's estimated that the conflict on Sunday left over 200 people dead. Ethnic Fulani herdsmen attacked three villages of inhabited by members of the Berom ethnicity in the early hours of Sunday morning. The BBC reported that many of the victims were women, children and elderly attacked with machetes.

The three villages are all within 10 miles of the city of Jos, in the central Plateau state of Nigeria. Analysts dubbed Sunday's conflict a reprisal for another encounter between Christians and Muslims in January that left hundreds dead.

Archbishop Olorunfemi said that international media often link violence between ethnic groups in Nigeria to religious roots, but, he explained, "this is not the case, because they don't kill each other due to religion, but for social, economic, tribal, (or) cultural demands."

The Church's reaction, the archbishop said, is that "we continue to work to promote good relations between Christians and Muslims and we seek also to come to an agreement in trying to curb the violence and work together to face concrete political and ethical problems."

He added that it would be the duty of the Nigerian government to provide security for the area, but "it appears to not have the capacity to do so."

Ninety five people have been arrested for Sundays conflicts, according to the Vatican Radio report, which was hand delivered to the media by Fr. Federico Lombardi in the Holy See's Press Office.

JOS, Nigeria (AFP) – Christian villagers in Nigeria fled their homes fearing new attacks Tuesday even as a senior official accused the country's military chiefs of ignoring warnings about last weekend's massacre.

Jonah Jang, governor of central Plateau state, said the carnage that claimed hundreds of lives of mainly Christian villagers could have been avoided had there not been security lapses.

Jang told reporters he alerted the Nigeria's army commander about reports of movement around the area and was told troops would be heading there.

But while he saw a military tank rumble by his home, located a few kilometres (miles) away from one of the affected villages, "three hours or so later, I was woken by a call that they (armed gangs) have started burning the village and people were being hacked to death.

"I tried to locate the commanders, (but) I couldn?t get any of them on the telephone," Jang told journalists in the capital Abuja.

Near the central city of Jos, mass burials were held for some of the hundreds of victims of a three-hour orgy of violence, while survivors nursed wounds in hospitals.
