UK statement following the Presidential Elections in Tanzania

UK statement following the Presidential Elections in Tanzania on 28 October 2020.
Published 1 November 2020
From:Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and James Duddridge MP

Following the Presidential Elections in Tanzania on 28 October 2020, Minister for Africa, James Duddridge, has made a statement.
Minister for Africa, James Duddridge said:
As a longstanding supporter of Tanzania, the UK is concerned by widespread allegations of interference in the country’s elections, including pre-filled ballot boxes and party agents being denied entry to polling stations. We are also deeply troubled by the reports of violence and heavy-handed policing in the elections, including the arrest of opposition political leaders.
Tanzania’s future stability and prosperity require a credible democratic process, underpinned by a free media. We join others in calling for a transparent investigation by the electoral authorities into reported irregularities, and for all involved, including the security forces, to act with restraint to ensure the peaceful resolution of tensions.

Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the EU on the upcoming elections in Tanzania

The citizens of the United Republic of Tanzania will elect on 28 October their President, Members of the parliaments of the Union and Zanzibar, as well as local councillors. The European Union would like to reiterate its support to the development and prosperity of the people of Tanzania and, in line with Article 4 of the Southern Africa Development Community treaty establishing the principles of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, its attachment to this process towards the consolidation of democratic institutions.

Reports of incidents and limitations in the run-up to the elections are of concern. The EU encourages all parties to work together diligently to enable inclusive, transparent, peaceful and credible elections. Democracy thrives from freedom of expression and assembly, and a political environment that values citizen engagement, equal participation, impartiality of state institutions, and upholds human rights. We look forward to our next steps for constructive, full cooperation between the EU and Tanzania.

30 October 2020, 20:43 UTC

Authorities in Tanzania’s semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar have mounted a campaign of intimidation, arbitrary detention and subsequent release of opposition leaders from the ACT-Wazalendo party following contested elections. Deprose Muchena, Amnesty International’s Director for East and Southern Africa, said:

At least 36 ACT-Wazalendo members and five party leaders have been arbitrarily detained in recent days

“At least 36 ACT-Wazalendo members and five party leaders have been arbitrarily detained in recent days. Presidential candidate Seif Sharif Hamad was yesterday arrested for the second time in a week, part of a crackdown on critics and political opponents. They were all later released on bail between Thursday night and Friday morning.

“These arrests, accompanied by heavy police presence on the streets, signal an escalating attack on political opponents and dissent in Zanzibar. Police must not be used as a tool of intimidation.

Engel Statement on Elections in Tanzania

October 30, 2020

Bronx, NY—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement:

“It has been tragic to see Tanzania, once a promising democracy, slide into autocracy under John Magufuli’s leadership. Wednesday’s election to secure Mr. Magufuli’s second term was marred by fraud and the intimidation of the ruling party’s political opponents, in addition to disruptions to social media and other online communication platforms. I call on Tanzanian security forces to immediately cease violence against members of the political opposition attempting to peacefully protest the conduct of the elections."

I thought you are a Magufuli die hard    Kumbe you can also be level headed !!!

Yaani wao wenyewe Kujiongoza wameshindwa Waiongoze Tanzania kweli!!
Nchi inapambana kujikwamua upinzani Unapambana Kuiangusha nchi Hao kweli wakushinda uchaguzi!!
Watu wasitafute Visingizio

ukweli Mkuu ni lazima uwekwe hadharani bila woga wala kificho. The TRUTH will ALWAYS set you FREE.
