Uchaguzi US: 2020

Actually, there’s a sort of culture war going on in America. We don’t see it because it hasn’t reached the fever pitch yet or because some of us are acquainted to social justice kind of politics, and we rely heavily on left leaning media outlets such as CNN for our daily dose of information. Therefore, we view Trump and those who voted for him from a very different angle. However, for Americans, in particular poor and working-class white Americas, he is an unlikely cult hero.

They regard him as a hero or one them for one or two reasons. First, they see him as a problem solver who can use his business experience to bring their former glories back on track. So, they overlook other characteristics which are normally ascribed to the president of the US. Second, they see him as the repudiation of the political establishment. By establishment, I mean career politician from both parties who have failed to address the economic decay for the middle-class families.

The use of labels with negative connotations to characterize Trump, his presidency and his supporters doesn’t paint the real picture or help the matter. This is the guy who has just added 10 million votes to his 2016 election tally. So, we can’t just call his supporters the craziest bunch and move on to another item. In fact, if we take a pause and step back to 2008 and 2016, we will find out that some of his supporters voted for Baraka Obama twice or at least once. So, the question one could ask now is what type of conversion these voters have gone through between 2008 and 2020? Additionally, can we say that they were rational voters when they voted for Baraka Obama and become insane when they voted for Trump?
He did not just add 10m votes to his tally, he just motivated more people (about 30m more voters) to vote, and the majority of those votes were against him!!

Yes, what you said is entirely true. The total number of people who voted against him is bigger than that voted against him. However, the manner of his defeat should be a thing of concern. For, Biden was supposed to win this election bigly. But that didn’t happen. As a matter of fact, Biden’s party lost some seats in the house of representatives and it won’t gain the majority in the US senate. On the contrary, some new Trump like lawmakers have joined the house. This is a troublesome trend and if the democrats don’t pay attention, the scenarios of 2016 and 2020 elections will recycle like plots in monster movie squeals. You defeat a monster mama in one squeal, in the next sequel her babies fight you with vengeance.

Therefore, it won’t surprise me if this guy makes a comeback in 2024 or continues to be the leader of the republican party for the next four years and give a voice to those like him. For, the divisions which Trump has used for his own political gains are still there. And I am not sure whether Biden will be able to find a remedy for them during his administration or republicans will continue to exploit the divisions for their political end as they did during the Obama’s tenure.

Biden won bigly, his winning margin is bigger than the population of four Trump's red states combined. The US congress getting more seats is not a result of votes but rather a result of gerrymandering. Even today Democrats in the US congress have more votes than republicans but gerrymadering which marks congressional districts in favor of republicans is what nmesses up the congress structure today. That was a brainchild of Tom Delay in the late 90's

Thanks for a bit of history. It seems to me Democrats have more support than Republicans. The question now is why Democrats let Republicans apply Gerrymandering tactics to allocate congressional districts?

It is a vicious cycle. Because of gerrymandering, republicans have more representation in state and federal regislatures, and because of having more representation in state legislatures, they practice gerrymandering again. It takes 10 years to break; it started in 2000, and since it was not broken in 2010, it continued to 2020 and there is no sign that it will be broken this year, so we have to wait until 2030.

Watching events unfold in the United States election 2020, is akin to watching Alpha Centauri AB about to go supernova: cannot stop watching, but knowing that the fallout from the supernova would be far-reaching. Not many times in one's lifetime one gets to see a ginormous constitutional republic like USA is in massive danger of breaking up. Otherwise, perhaps USA is going through the valley of death and will emerge from it stronger than ever. If so, then we must be witnessing something similar to a nebula birth of new star!

True, and here is a little more more...

Because of Gerrymandering Democrats have to win the popular vote and the electoral votes to win the presidency. GOP, on the other hand, has a history of winning the presidency several times in spite of losing the popular vote like in 2016.

This is because it’s common for GOP to represent a minority of voters in the state yet hold a majority of seats in the state legislature. This has enabled GOP to draw maps that really, really advantage the party in future elections.

As it stands now Republicans have majority control in the legislatures of 30 states. In 23 states they control the legislature and the governorship (a “trifecta”). Democrats control the legislatures in 18 states and have trifectas in 15 states.

This is a big advantage to the GOP and a significant setback to the Democrats. However, when the state Governor is from another party, he has veto powers in the redistricting process but if there is a dispute the State Supreme court steps in.

In spite of this advantage to GOP ten states will in future rely on Independent redistricting commissions to draw new maps. These are Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, and Washington.

This independent redistricting will still favor republicans since it touches small republican states and does not touch big states such as Texas, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The media outlets are having a field day. The election could have been done and dusted long time ago if Trump had known the value of conceding defeats gracefully. However, his post-election antics and those of his lawyers are must watch TV-dramas. Therefore, every media outlet is in the hunt for the latest bit of information about Trump. And if you live outside the country, you might as well think that the US is about to break up in a spectacular fashion.

However, that isn’t the case and, on the ground, things have cooled down significantly. There’s no point to feel that the country has reached the tipping point. Besides, what separate America from many other countries is the respect of court decisions. Once Trump exhausts all his legal avenues in the court, he will have no other choice but to go. That’s the beauty of America as he won’t be able to use the military or any other tricks to stay in power.

Kichuguu:

There's one important factor to take into consideration. People who are leaning to vote for the Democrat party are irregular voters. For example, when Barack Obama was on the presidential ballot in 2008 and 2012, they came out in big number to vote. However, in mid term elections, the didn't show up in massive number. On the contrary, Republicans are very active and they take local elections very seriously because they know winning those elections gives them an advantage.

That is true; most democrat voters are not that much political. On the other side republican voters are highly political and they focus on two agenda items only: Judges who support their standing on social issues and lowering taxes even if they benefit from those taxes as it turns out to be the case in the poorest red states such as KY, WV, and all red rural areas of the US, which are reddest . They vote for anyone who carries the republican flag even if that is a bogus person like Trump. Trust me that if Obama changes and becomes a republican today, they will vote for him!!

Democrats are not very good at sticking with specific agenda items; they are more reactive instead of being proactive!

Au contraire, if the election is contested between two sides: why demand concession from one side only?

Her excellency, Hillary Clinton, told Joe Biden to never concede "under any circumstances". Under. Any. Circumstances. Any!
( Hillary Clinton says Biden should not concede the election 'under any circumstances' )

The current US president Donald Trump, egged-on by his supporters, also plans to never concede.
( Poll results showed I shouldn’t concede to Biden —Trump ).

The unfolding drama, when viewed from the ostensibly dark-side of the right-wing politics, paints a dire situation about the election. It confuses us who are reading from afar. May someone in the know, shed some light on the points raised why they are right or wrong? See some links below for example:

Personally I read news from the major media outlets. If something isn't there, then I won't go for that. The reason for that is major media outlets try to maintain journalistic standards and it is easier for me to verify if what they disseminate is true or not. Besides, a lot of political and social information we read on the internet is based individual opinions which very subjective.

That's what it concerns me. If Democrats don't put their acts together. It won't surprise me if a Trump copycat will become president in the future . Trump wasn't a typical republican per se. But he made a political conversion which has made him endeared in the republican party. He was a democract, but he figured out that he didn't have the brain to stand there. He then switched to independent. He didn't get any traction there either. Besides, as independent he would have divided the votes, the way Ross Perot did in 1992.

The election is over guys and the relevant states have all certified the election results and no cheap political grandstanding on the part of that sore loser will change that fact. On January 20, 2021 the inauguration will take place as planned and Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th President and anybody who doubts this has so mush to learn about the United States of America.

In 2016, President was sworn in as the 45th President in spite losing the popular vote by almost 3 million but life moved on. This year the same Donald Trump has lost not only the popular votes by over 6 million but also the electoral votes 232-306 and the book is closed. He can make as much noise as he wants but it wont matter and you can bet the sky wont fall down and life will go on.

Meanwhile the con man is raking in money from his gullible die hard fans and so far he has reaped over 170 million dollars just by promising them an ignis fatuus and they have swallowed it! He has promised them a fight to the bitter end, a war cry to stop the steal but today even his loyal AG Barr was branded a liar and a fool by his minions for calling a spade by its name, poor Donald!

Trump is still whining! Today his henchman Giuliani was in Michigan trying to bend the state the legislature. He brought even drunk witnesses.

and Trump was crying heavily in the white house

Since, the Supreme Court of the US ruled that corporations are people, the election industrial complex has increased its size significantly. Lawyers, political strategists and pollsters are making a lot of money from gullible followers and organizations during the elections. Look at Rudy Giuliani. He makes a mockery of himself. It seems he is more interesting on getting the piece of the pie than representing Trump.

A friend of mine is very religious and educated. In 2016 election, she told me the revolution was coming and when Trump won, she was over the moon. Now when I look back, I think if you don't pay attention, your belief can create blind spots and impair your thinking.
