Theresa May is set to become the UK's next prime minister after Andrea Leadsom pulled out of the contest to become Conservative Party leader.

The timing of the handover of power from David Cameron is currently being discussed, but could be within days.

Mrs May, 59, who backed staying in the EU, has been home secretary since 2010.

Mrs Leadsom, who campaigned to leave the EU, said the UK needed "strong and stable government" and that Mrs May was "ideally placed" to implement Brexit.

In a speech earlier on Monday setting out her leadership campaign platform, Mrs May - who rejected the argument that the next leader and prime minister had to have been someone on the winning side of the EU referendum - said: "Brexit means Brexit and we're going to make a success of it."

In her brief statement in Westminster, Mrs Leadsom - who was a leading light of the Brexit campaign - said a nine-week leadership campaign at such a "critical time" for the UK would be "highly undesirable".

A source close to the energy minister told BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg "the abuse has been too great" for Mrs Leadsom during the contest.

Mrs Leadsom had apologised to Mrs May on Monday after suggesting in a weekend newspaper interview that being a mother made her a better candidate for the job.

Mrs Leadsom, who was flanked by some of her supporters, said: "Strong leadership is needed urgently to begin the work of withdrawing from the European Union. A nine-week leadership campaign at such a critical moment is highly undesirable."

She said Mrs May, the home secretary, had the support of more than 60% of Conservative MPs and was "ideally placed to implement Brexit on the best possible terms for the British people and she has promised she will do so".

Mrs Leadsom said she was "incredibly grateful" to the 84 colleagues who supported her leadership bid.

'Deeply honoured'
But she added: "Nevertheless, this is less than 25% of the parliamentary party and after careful consideration I do no believe this is sufficient support to lead a strong and stable government should I win the leadership election."

She said: "There is no greater privilege than to lead the Conservative Party in government and I would have been deeply honoured to do it.

"I have however concluded that the interests of our country are best served by the immediate appointment of a strong and well-supported prime minister.

"I am therefore withdrawing from the leadership election, and I wish Mrs May the very greatest success."

The leadership contest is being overseen by the 1922 committee of backbench Conservative MPs.

Its chairman, Graham Brady, said Mrs May would be formally confirmed as the new party leader as soon as the Conservative Party board had been consulted - saying there would be "no need to re-run the election".

He declined to give an exact timetable for the next steps - other than to say it would not be "nine weeks" until Mr Cameron's successor was in place.

The contest was originally scheduled to finish on 9 September.

The time between Gordon Brown winning the Labour leadership uncontested and succeeding Tony Blair as prime minister was 38 days.

'Time to unite'
Reacting to Mrs Leadsom's decision, Chris Grayling, Mrs May's campaign chief, said it showed what a "principled and decent politician she is".

Speaking outside the Houses of Parliament, he said Mrs May - who is on her way back to London from Birmingham after her campaign speech - was "enormously honoured" to be entrusted with the task of leadership, and would make a statement later.

In a message to the party, he added: "Now is the time for us to unite... and get on with the job of securing a strong, prosperous future for our country."

Meanwhile, former London mayor Boris Johnson - who was backing Mrs Leadsom's leadership bid, said he had "no doubt" Mrs May would be an "excellent" leader and prime minister.

He said he was "encouraged" by Mrs May's statement that "Brexit means Brexit", and added: "It is vital that we respect the will of the people and get on with exploiting new opportunities for this country."

Snap election?
There had originally been five contenders to succeed Mr Cameron, with MPs voting in two rounds to get that number down to two - and the plan then was that the party's 150,000-strong membership would have had the final say.

Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens are calling for a snap general election, rather than waiting for the contest scheduled for 2020 under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act.

Labour's election co-ordinator, Jon Trickett, said: "It is crucial, given the instability caused by the Brexit vote, that the country has a democratically elected prime minister. I am now putting the whole of the party on a general election footing."

Mr Farron, Lib Dem leader, said: "With Theresa May's coronation we need an early general election. The Tories now have no mandate. Britain deserves better than this."

Meanwhile, a Labour leadership contest has begun after Angela Eagle launched a bid to challenge Jeremy Corbyn for the job, saying she she could provide the leadership in "dark times for Labour" that Mr Corbyn could not.

Wajuzi wa siasa, tujulisheni faida na hasara za huyu mwana mama kuwa PM.

London (CNN) British Prime Minister David Cameron is to resign Wednesday, paving the way for Home Secretary Theresa May to take the reins.

May was officially named Conservative Party leader and successor to Cameron "with immediate effect" Monday, said Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee, a collection of Conservative members of Parliament key to electing the party leader. She will replace Cameron on Wednesday evening.

In remarks shortly after her leadership was affirmed, May said her priorities will be to administer Britain's exit from the European Union, a move approved by voters last month, to unite the country and to create a "strong, new, positive vision for the future," not just for the privileged few, but for everyone.

Cameron had already announced he would step down by October after failing to convince the country to remain in the EU in the divisive June 23 referendum that sent shockwaves through Britain's political establishment.

But Monday, May's only remaining rival to replace Cameron -- Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom -- pulled out of the race following controversy over comments she made about motherhood and leadership.

"Obviously, with these changes, we now don't need to have a prolonged period of transition. And so tomorrow I will chair my last Cabinet meeting. On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for Prime Minister's questions," Cameron told reporters Monday outside 10 Downing Street.

"And then after that I expect to go to the palace and offer my resignation. So we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening."

The vote between May and Leadsom was supposed to go to the wider Conservative Party of 150,000 people, but being the sole candidate, May sidestepped the party rule.

Cameron welcomed Leadsom's decision to drop out of the race and said he was confident May would steer the country in the right direction, calling her strong and competent, and offering her his full support.

Is this democratic?

May became the last one standing for a job no one else really wanted. It is the latest twist in Britain's political saga that ensued after the "Brexit" vote. May, who supported Britain remaining in the EU, reiterated her commitment to Brexit on Monday.

"Brexit means Brexit, and we're going to make a success of it. There will be no attempts to remain inside the EU. No attempts to rejoin it by the back door. No second referendum. The country voted to leave the European Union, and as prime minister, I will make sure we leave the European Union," she said.

Who is Theresa May?

220px-Theresa_May_2015.jpg

Theresa Mary May ( born 1 October 1956) is a British politician who is the Prime Minister Designate and Leader of the Conservative Party since 11 July 2016, the Home Secretary since 2010, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Maidenhead since 1997. Identifying as a One-Nation Conservative and characterized as a liberal conservative, May is expected to replace David Cameron as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II on 13 July, becoming the second female UK prime minister and the first one in 21st centuries after fellow Conservative Margaret Thatcher.

Born in Eastbourne, Sussex, May studied geography at St Hugh's College, Oxford. From 1977 until 1983, May worked at the Bank of England, and from 1985 until 1997 at the Association for Payment Clearing Services, also serving as a councillor for the London Borough of Merton's Durnsford Ward. After unsuccessful attempts to be elected to the House of Commons in 1992 and 1994, she was elected MP for Maidenhead in the 1997 general election. May served in a number of roles in the Shadow Cabinets of William Hague, Iain Duncan Smith, Michael Howard, and David Cameron, including Shadow Leader of the House of Commons and Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary. She was also the Chairman of the Conservative Party from 2002 until 2003.

After the formation of the Coalition Government following the 2010 general election, May was appointed Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, giving up the latter role in 2012. Reappointed after the Conservative victory in the 2015 general election, she went on to become the longest-serving Home Secretary since James Chuter Ede over 60 years previously, pursuing reform of the police, taking a harder line on drug policy and introducing restrictions on immigration.

Following the resignation of Cameron in June 2016, May announced her candidacy for the leadership of the Conservative Party and quickly emerged as the front-runner. She won the first ballot of Conservative MPs on 5 July by a significant margin, and two days later won the votes of 199 MPs, going forward to face a vote of Conservative Party members in a contest with Andrea Leadsom. Leadsom's withdrawal from the election on 11 July led to May's appointment as leader the same day.

"...May is a member of the Church of England and regularly worships at church on Sunday.[1][2][137] The daughter of an Anglican priest, Reverend Hubert Brasier, May has said that her Christian faith "... is part of me. It is part of who I am and therefore how I approach things".[138]

Background ya mtu ni muhimu sana. Huku kwetu muhimu umaarufu.
