πŸ‘‘ THE WEDDING OF PRINCESS ALICE & LUDWIG IV (Louis)πŸ‘‘

πŸ‘‘ On July 1st 1862, 19 year old Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, married Prince Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine, at Osborne house- Isle of Wight.

πŸ‘‘ The couple would go on to have seven children, and the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was a Great Grandson of Alice & Ludwig.

πŸ‘‘ Alice was the third child, and second daughter of Queen Victoria, and Prince Albert.
From an early age, Alice would develop a deep compassion for others, which would continue throughout her life.

πŸ‘‘ At the end of 1881, Alice's father, Prince Albert, died.
It was Alice who stayed by his side, nursing him through his final days.
When her mother went into a deep mourning, it was Alice who acted as her secretary, handling state paper and correspondence, all while comforting her mother.

πŸ‘‘ Ludwig was the eldest of four children, of Prince Karl of Hesse and by Rhine, and his wife, Princess Elisabeth of Prussia.
Prince Karls brother, Grand Duke Ludwig III would have no children with his wife Mathilde of Bavaria, so his nephew Ludwig was groomed as his successor.

πŸ‘‘ Ludwig and his brother Heinrich, were invited to Windsor in 1860, and Ludwig and Alice soon developed a connection.
On Ludwig's second visit in 1860, the young couple became engaged.
After Queen Victoria gave her formal consent, the engagement was publicly announced on April 30th, 1861.

πŸ‘‘ After Alice's father's death late in 1861, Alice's wedding would not be the grand affair that she had hoped for.
A private wedding was scheduled for July 1st 1862, at Osborne house, Isle of Wight.

πŸ‘‘ The dining room at Osborne house, was converted into a chapel, for the occasion.
On the morning of the wedding, Alice's sister's were all in black mourning dresses.
They changed into their white Bridesmaids gowns for the wedding, and then changed back into mourning dress when the couple left for their honeymoon.

πŸ‘‘ Alice wore a relatively simple dress with a deep flounce of Honiton lace, with a border of orange blossoms on the hem.
Her Honiton lace veil, was held in place with a wreath of orange blossoms.

πŸ‘‘ Queen Victoria spent the ceremony, seated in her chair, staring at the portrait of her beloved Albert, which hung above the couple.
Victoria later said, "it was more of a funeral, than a wedding!"

πŸ‘‘ After a luncheon, and around 5pm, Alice and Ludwig left for their honeymoon to Ryde - a seaside town on the northeast coast of the Isle of Wight.

πŸ‘‘ Victoria wrote to her eldest daughter, Vicky, that-
" A dagger is plunged deep into my bleeding desolate heart,
when i hear from Alice this morning, that she is proud and
happy to be his wife.

πŸ‘‘ On July 9th 1862, Alice and Ludwig, leave on the Royal Yacht, Victoria & Albert, for Europe, and then on to their final destination, Darmstadt.

πŸ‘‘ At 4.30pm on July 12th 1862, Alice and Ludwig made their state entry at Darmstadt.
The streets were decorated with arches, flags and flowers, the church bells were ringing, and the enthusiastic crowds cheered for the newlyweds
