The National Democratic Institute (NDI) works to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.

Since its founding in 1983, NDI has worked with local partners in 156 countries and territories, bringing together individuals and groups to share ideas, knowledge, experiences and expertise.

In Tanzania, NDI is supporting civil society organizations (CSOs) and other stakeholders to address barriers to political participation of women, youth and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

By strengthening dialogue and collaboration among citizen networks, coalitions, and government stakeholders, NDI aims to deepen inclusive democratic processes. NDI invites applications for the Advocacy Officer positon based in Dar es Salaam.

Job Purpose:
As a key member of the NDI Tanzania team, the Advocacy Officer will provide guidance to local CSO partners, design, coordinate support and/or initiatives regarding the inclusive political participation of women, youth and persons with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Contributes to program priorities, develop strategy to increase advocacy capacity of partner civil society organizations
  • Designation of project priorities, development and implementation of partner selection criteria
  • Manages sub-awards issued to partners in coordination with the Finance Officer
  • Provides technical assistance and guidance to partners to ensure good financial management practices, in addition to increases organizational capacity on skills necessary for advocacy efforts
  • Serves as a point of contact for local partners and issue stakeholders and represents NDI at appropriate events or as designated by senior management
  • Tracks and monitors program and partner progress and provides reports on such information
  • Plans workshops, conferences, and trainings for partner organizations and stakeholders
  • Drafts communications and advocacy materials to support partners
  • Drafts memos, reports and other materials, such as but not limited to quarterly reports, work plans and proposals
  • Travels to regions/districts to organize events, conducts assessments, contributes to M&E, assesses new opportunities to develop programs, and implements training activities
  • Recruits and briefs national trainers, volunteers and field representatives
  • Brings to this position, as well as works to develop and cultivate, a network of contacts
  • Contributes to NDI and C80 partner communications and visibility strategies

Qualifications, Experience, Essential Skills and Competencies:
  • Passionate about democracy and governance
  • Advanced university degree in the field of political science, law, international relations or other social science related subject preferred. Years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational preference on a one-for-one basis
  • Minimum of four years of work experience in advocacy, citizen organizing or related field
  • Experience in program design, administration and monitoring and evaluation preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili
  • Capacity to work with diverse range of organizations and political entities, including the Government of Tanzania
  • Ability to analyze political dynamics, define problems and think innovatively
  • Ability to take initiative, inspire, motivate staff and C80 partners
  • Financial and program management skills
  • Computer literate, experience with Google applications, Microsoft Word, Power Point presentations Commitment to maintaining a non-partisan position
  • Can work independently and in a team
  • Commitment to excellence in delivering results
