Project description

The “Multi stakeholder climate action plan in Njombe” project is going to be implemented by SHIPO with the funding and support of GIZ and the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear safety, under the IKI Small grants program. The project will start in spring 2022 and run for 2 years.

In the Tanzanian agriculture-based economy, efforts have been made to integrate climate change into agriculture and nutrition security policies, still, there is a gap in understanding of concepts and know-how at the local level, and a need for stakeholder mapping and bottom-up approaches.

This project´s objective is to create conditions (awareness, knowledge, technology and economic incentives) and coordinate and mobilise key societal sectors in Njombe rural and town councils (government, civil society and private sector) to implement climate mitigation and adaptation activities that are fit to the local context.

In order to achieve that awareness raising activities with stakeholders from diverse sectors of society are going to be the foundation to develop a joint climate action plan at district level. The action plan will be the backbone to activate stakeholders in two main ways: 1) students, artisans, organisation, communities and industries are going to have spaces (workshops, bootcamps, audiovisual materials in swahili), support and economic incentives to learn and to develop climate friendly actions within their activities. 2) Public authorities, communities and organisations are going to co-design climate pilot projects addressing both specific local issues (e.g. agriculture and malnutrition) and general issues (e.g. transport and waste treatment), that will gain the attention of more stakeholders who will be able
