TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES IN TANZANIA
1.0 Introduction
Technological changes main aim is to have a positive impact towards the society, this
means that it has more advantages rather than drawbacks, but achieving this in the
developing countries has been difficult due to one reason or another, even for the case of
Tanzania.
The Government plays an important role on adapting the technological changes that may
help develop the life and conditions of their citizens, but it has been observed that the
developing countries Government has always been subjective to failure to do so.
Also the society should assist the government on providing education about the
technological changes that may affect others in a positive or negative manner, therefore
since the government cannot achieve these alone, they can both corporate with each other
to address this issue.
2.0 Main Body
Changes or advancement in Technology is highly correlated with globalization, the rapid
development in technology can and has also helped economic, cultural and knowledge
development, therefore below is the impact of technological changes in Tanzania;
The elaboration of how technological affects or gets affected in Tanzania has been divided
into three major sectors; Health, Administration system and the society as whole, this will
help justify the impacts of technological changes in developing countries (Tanzania being
the case).
2.1 Health Sector
Developing Countries are usually left behind on many aspects of development including
technological development, Tanzania being a good example it was observed that for
instance a simple example of reducing queues and loss of information on places as
hospitals was lately adopted by the health systems, Until the late 2010s many or almost
all public hospitals were using the non-technological system of file and patient’s storage,
this lead to loss of thousands of information that would’ve been helpful on one way or
another.
This means that if the Government would’ve adopted the technological changes of
Information & Technology (IT) a little bit earlier, we would’ve stored and saved a
thousands of health information that were misplaced.
2.2 Administrative Sectors
Another sector being highly affected by the technological changes in Tanzania is the
Administrative system in general starting from the Executive organ of the Government,
Institutions to even small scale private and public sectors.
a) Executive Government
It is still hard to believe that even the Administrative system in the Tanzanian Executive
Government still lags behind on Technological changes aspect, for instance the Late fifth
president of the united republic of Tanzania Dr. John Joseph Pombe Magufuli, who was
the head of executive government publicly stated that he has late nights due to working
on files that are scattered on his bed, this statement simply justifies that technological in
Tanzania is still low since even the Head of state has not even adopted technological filing
system that would’ve saved his time and help him run the position smoothly, Also on
another justification the president’s office released a picture of the late president on his
desk with a large number of physical files.

Fig 1 a, b; Shows the former Tanzanian president in his office with large amount of files
on his desk, justifies the head of the executive government lagging technological
adaptation vs Kenyan president, (Source; Ansbert Ngurumo & Kennedy 2020).

b) Institutions
The administrative systems in large technological institutions such as Tanzanian
universities that even offer technological courses to their students, but they still fail to
apply technology on their administration systems and hence lead to use large amount of
time to just register their students, Real life example is the Mbeya University of Science
& Technology (MUST) that also offers Computer engineering and Computer Science
courses takes 3-4 weeks to register their students by physical process as per march 2021,
(Source; Author 2021).
This justifies that the technological changes in Tanzania is still lowly adapted and hence
slowing down the overall development, since the time spent on the non-technological
process would’ve been saved and used to bring development if and only technology was
early adopted.
2.3 Society
Tanzanian citizens have adopted the technological changes mostly in a negative manner,
they have not explored the full power of technology with its changes and therefore they
have narrowed their potential to technological development, for instance many Tanzanian
societies have adopted only the use of social networks more on entertainment basis only,
but only few people in the society are well aware the positive technological changes, for
instance nowadays people seek fame in the social networks only for gossiping rather than
using the social networks for generating income and educating the society.
The society is now more interested in following up these gossiping social networks more
than following up the social networks that provides education and news, these can be
justified by the number of followers and likes that the gossiping social networks get verses
the number of educating & news reporting social networks, blogs and platforms.
For instance, in developed countries, popular social media content owners generate a huge
amount of money from their accounts unlike here in Tanzania they end up having a large
number of followers without any other benefit rather than uploading posts of
advertisement that only generate a very small amount of money.
Therefore, apart from using the technological development change for getting gossips and
propagandas, the society should use it wisely and provide education and news to others
and hence hold strong content that may influence the social networks management to enter
into contract with the account owners and hence help them generate income from the
internet.
Fig 2 a, b; Shows how the society as whole has adapted the technological changes more
in a negative manner rather than positive-wise, this can be justified by above photo that
Tanzanian Instagram users have choose to follow a gossiping account more than their own
news channel account that has been serving them since 1994, (Source; Author 2021).

3.0 Conclusion
On finalizing generally Tanzania as a developing country, we have failed to adopt well
the technological development and use is wisely so as to help us gain more positivity from
it rather than in a negative manner, since we have witnessed above that starting from the
Health sector, Administrative sector (including the Government) and the Society wholly
itself still lags behind in a huge manner.
Therefore, it is an advice that may be taken into consideration that the government and the
Tanzanian society as whole should take the responsibility and help educate others on how
they can use the change in technology in a positive manner and gain much advantages
such as Income, Time saving, News and Education, but not only gossiping and
propagandas.
It is my hope that this article will be helpful on educating and brightening the society and
Tanzania at whole on how they can adapt the technological changes in a positive manner
so that they can gain from it economically, culturally and even gain knowledge from it
and help educate others.
