Dodoma: The chairman of the [ruling] Chama cha Mapinduzi [CCM] party, President Benjamin Mkapa, has said that since he assumed power he has retired or dismissed about 1,500 civil servants and employees of parastatals for corruption and dishonesty.
Opening the CCM's fifth national congress at Kimwaga [phonetic] Hall in Dodoma today, Chairman Mkapa said that he had taken such steps due to insufficient evidence existing to take the suspects to court.
Applauded by some 1,500 delegates and guests, including the chief guest, President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Chairman Mkapa named the affected ministries as those of Finance, Home Affairs, Works, Prime Minister's Office and Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
President Mkapa said steps were being taken to ensure that in cases for which evidence was available the culprits would be taken to court...
President Mkapa said that as a result of the measures being instituted by the government to fight corruption, the international community had pledged to help improve and strengthen the anti-corruption authority to enable it to perform its duties more efficiently.
On the government's revenue collection, President Mkapa said that despite all efforts to collect the revenue, there was still a shortfall of nearly 15bn shillings, which could have helped towards meeting the government's actual monthly expenditure of 60bn shillings.
He said the government was currently collecting 45bn shillings every month.
President Mkapa said the government would continue to create a good environment for investors to invest in various sectors, including those of agriculture and mining, so as to increase government revenue to enable it to provide its citizens with services.
The four-day CCM national congress will elect the party's chairman and two vice-chairmen for the Tanzania mainland and the islands respectively, as well as representatives to the national executive committee, while also attending to other business.
