Tanzania: Ruling party plans to lock out opposition candidates as they did in local elections

The country’s main opposition party CHADEMA’s candidate, Tundu Lissu, and other opposition leaders have repeatedly claimed that there’s a likelihood that they’ll be blocked from running in this year’s general elections in October.

“The biggest date now is August 25th and 26th when we submit our nomination papers,” Lissu tells The Africa Report. “CCM (the ruling party) does not want any competition.”

He adds: “We’ve said publicly that we are not going to accept any such, our people to be ready for protests. There will be popular action should our candidates be disqualified.”

Fellow opposition leader, Zitto Kabwe, who leads the ACT-Wazalendo party, have raised concerns that the country’s electoral body could repeat what it did in local elections last year that included locking out their candidates and gave the ruling party nearly all the contested positions.

On 12 August, Kabwe tweeted: “We hear that the National Electoral Commission (NEC) will not nominate some candidates from the Opposition Parties to the Presidency and Parliament for various reasons. I warn Judge Kaijage not to justify the unjust deal otherwise there will be NO ELECTION.”

Other than the real possibility of disqualification from the October race, which could see President Magufuli win a second term, opposition leaders also have to contend with many other hurdles.

Among them is state harassment and frequent arrests, and in the case of Lissu, an attempted assassination in 2017. The country has also increased further restrictions on the media and free speech, in what has been a systematic crackdown on freedom of the press over the last five years.

This is what they are planning to do but thanks to God our presidential material is do well. The first step is over, we pray for Tundu Lissu thus God leads him to emerge the winner. This country needs a courage person who has been a victim of pain and suffering. A person who has tasted the pain of horror and torture like Mr. Lissu is the right person we need for the development of peace and justice. God help Tundu Lissu

Msipokua makini huyo Lissu atawapokonya tonge mdomoni, atawanyang'anya kula yenu, naona hadi hapo mnashauriwa vizuri hamjamfanyia uhuni wowote japo matukio machache tu kama kutia kiberiti ofisi zao. Sijui mumejipanga kivipi maana kwenye hoja atawashinda sana ikiwemo mkithubutu kufanya naye mdahalo ndio mtaangukia pua.
Mpaka sasa naona hoja zenu mumekita kwenye kumshutumu kuwa katumwa na mabeberu, msaliti n.k. Hamna kingine kikubwa mnachokitumia, muhimu mkajiongeza maana hizo naona Watanzania hawazinunui.

I have no dog in this fight, but in my opinion the opposition seems to have quite a good number of professionals, who have shown their capacity in diplomacy.
I think if Mr. Lissu wins, Tanzania will change for the better. He has shown himself to be an astute diplomat capable of resolving differences like an adult without being arrogant. He stands for a free press and a free society which is important if you want to create a sustainable economy.

GoT and Magufuli have done more harm to Tanzania's image internationally than Kenya would ever do. In the eyes of the world, Tanzania right now is an authoritarian pseudo-democracy where private rights to property, freedom from persecution by government are not guaranteed.
No investor outside mining would like to invest in an unstable society, where the judiciary is under the command of the executive being run by a capricious, megalomaniac.
