Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has come a long way, if one looks back over the last four to five years. The TRC Board has provided solid guidance and there is no doubt that the TRC has loyal customers who believe and trust in rail transportation.

Government, under the leadership of his Excellence Dr. John Joseph Pombe Magufuli, should be commended for their substantial investment in rolling stock rehabilitation, specifically wagons, (for the meter gauge line) as well as their initiatives in improving and extending the Dar es Salaam and Tanga port, which will continue to increase regional and inland business, as well as, improving the linkage between Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC).

Through the World Bank, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has been able to implement the Tanzania Intermodal Rail Project (TIRP) which continues to accomplish the 970km of rail track from Dar es Salaam to Isaka dry port.

The railway sector in Tanzania operates in a monopolistic market structure, due to heavy infrastructural investment which includes tracks, signalling systems, stations, yards, good sheds and depots used by the rail operator.

As an industry, we are all well aware that rail is the best option for carrying bulk goods (dry or liquid) as it provides greater capacity, regularity and higher energy efficiency compared with other transportation modes

Industrial Development And The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR)
At the moment, the Government of United Republic of Tanzania is implementing the first phase of their SGR from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza (1,219km) which is divided into a number of lots. The first lot from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro is 70.5% complete. The second lot from Morogoro to Makutupora is 22% complete.

Under the leadership of his excellence Dr. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli, there are plans to construct a further 4,190km of track, these include:

Mtwara-Mbamba Bay railway :- 1,000km, 750km main line to link Mtwara port and Lake Nyasa through Ruvuma and spurs 250km to Liganga iron ore and Mchuchuma coal mining.

  1. Tanga Port – Arusha – Musoma:- 1,000km to connect Tanga port, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Singida, Simiyu, Musoma, Spurs to Minjingu, Engaruka Mineral and Dutwa Nickel mine in Bariadi
  2. Tabora – Kigoma:- 411km linking Kigoma to Tabora
  3. Uvinza – Msongati:- 240km whereby 156km in Tanzania and 84km in Burundi
  4. Isaka – Rusumo – Kigali:- 371km to connect Kigali with central line with target of goods/cargo from Eastern Congo

The SGR line will have a capacity of hauling a minimum of 17 Million metric tons. Passengers train will run at a speed of 160kph whereas freight trains will run at a speeds of 120kph. Trains ( electric) are to be equipped with ERTMS level 2 and GSM – R signalling systems.

Project benefits to date:

Local content policy in action - a total of 640 contracts for supply and subcontracting, have been issued.

The project has made use of locally registered companies for the supply of some materials, such as - Rebar, Cement, Fuel and Concrete. A few of these companies include: Kamal Steel Ltd, Nyati Enter-prices, Puma Energy Tanzania Ltd, and Gulf Concrete Ltd.

The project contractors provided sub contracts of small scale and medium scale contracts to local engineers. The sub contracted works included - civil works, infrastructural works, architectural, track, catenary, steel, mechanical, cladding, formwork and scaffolding, to mention just a few.

Over 14,000 direct jobs have been created so far.

Cement is 100% locally sourced and the project is estimated to use 9.3 million bags of cement. This creates spiral effect for economic development.

115 million kg of BS 500 steel Bars will be required for the SGR project and is being locally sourced due to the investment created by the demand.

A factory for the production of concrete sleepers has been established in Soga and Kilosa with new technology and skills transfer. Tanzanian Engineers, and technicians are producing sleepers. These two factories will be able to support the next lots/ phase of Tanzania’s SGR project.

SGR Benefits During Operations
The economic impact will be significant just in the reduction of travel time - from 3 hours to 75 minutes for Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and from 7 hours to 3 hours from Dodoma to Dar es Salaam.

The Project will ease logistics and create new industrial zones in other regions like Singida, Tabora, Shinyanga, and Dodoma Instead of just relying on Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mbeya and Mwanza alone.

When implementing an Industrialization policy, investment in infrastructure is key – this is exactly why the Government of Tanzania is doing. By investing huge capital in transport and energy sector projects, they are pushing forward the effort of industrializing in country, which will ultimately facilitate production activities across the value chain including sectors such as Agriculture and the industrial sector, boosting the country’s economy.

The main role of TRC, is to develop, promote and manage rail infrastructure assets by providing efficient and reliable rail transport services in Africa by - managing rail transport in a cost effective manner through development, and maintenance of railways systems.

To increase Tanzania’s infrastructure for trade in three ways

  1. Co-financing the Dar Port expansion together with the World Bank and Tanzania Port Authority will double port capacity and enable Tanzania’s entire trade volume to increase by two thirds.
  2. Project preparation funding for six more major regional transport projects is expected to catalyse up to £600m of development finance incorporating the climate-resilient design.
  3. Launching a new approach to Public-Private Partnerships will improve infrastructure in municipal areas and build capacity for larger PPP’s in the future.
The programme is expected to reduce the costs of doing business in Tanzania, contributing to growth, more jobs and lower poverty. The short-term beneficiaries will be users such as traders, logistics providers and public citizens.

Tanzania PM says 300-km standard gauge railway 87 pct complete

AR ES SALAAM, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Friday inspected construction of the 300-km standard gauge railway (SGR) from the commercial capital Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, said a statement issued by his office.

The statement said relevant officials told Majaliwa that construction of the 300-km SGR is 87 percent complete.

"The government has embarked on the construction of the transportation infrastructure to enhance trade within and outside the country," said the statement, adding that improvement of the infrastructure was also aimed at giving Tanzanians more choices for the mode of transportation.

In November 2019, Tanzanian President John Magufuli said the governments of Tanzania and Rwanda were in final stages of negotiations to construct an SGR from Isaka dry port in Tanzania to Rwanda.

Magufuli said the SGR will also serve landlocked countries of Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He said feasibility studies for the SGR linking Tanzania and Rwanda have already been undertaken, adding that the two countries are now looking for financiers of the project.

Also in November 2019, the Trade and Development Bank (TDB), a trade and development financial institution in Africa, approved a loan of 1 billion U.S. dollars to Tanzania for infrastructure projects.

A statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communications at Chamwino State House in Dodoma said the release of the loan was announced by TDB President and Chief Executive Officer Admassu Tadesse during talks with President Magufuli.
